Honestly I'm pretty hyped about this game. I feel like Lunar Magic and SMBX have more custom functionality though, but I've always been a fan of level editors like these.
I doubt that this part would happen (unless if raocow or any judges owns a Wii U or anything), but has anyone wondered how it would be like if there were MAGLs for SMM.

My biggest worry about the game was that i'd be too limiting to avoid people breaking it. Like they'd prevent you from doing things that would be too janky since its a pretty big game and it needs to be very polished but the more they show of it the less i worry.
They're really taking the time to figure out how thing that were never put together in a mario game would interract together and thats nice. Its probably going to be pretty decent but now im also a bit sick of nintendo mentionning it so much.

That's why something like this should go through what's called OPEN BETA, which Nintendo would never agree to a second time (Splatoon probably scared them out of their wits, doing it the way it was done.)

raocow and I have discussed Mario Maker pretty extensively over Skype and the answer, based on our random conversations, is "probably never." Besides raocow requiring a capture card for his Wii U to play such a MaGL, Mario Maker lacks any form of programming elements (like SMBX events, etc) or customization (even recolouring) and thus both raocow and myself are less than enthused as to its prospects. Lots of samey levels or spammy levels is what we're both expecting.
.
Honestly from what I've seen at the Nintendo """World""" Championship, Mario Maker seems to literally be an improved SMBX (sans Kil's extention I guess, but maglx1 didn't use it afaik?). It seems to have a lot more options, what with sprite variety, size, new powerups, and more importantly actually decent physics. Though yeah maybe you won't be able to do a level with 100 talking npcs (and even then, maybe you will) but I would argue that's actually a good thing. Like seriously, you're using vanilla SMBX for its "programming elements"? e : also : see vanilla contests
Like, when it was announced I couldn't care less about Mario Maker, it seemed super limited and just bad, but even knowing the nintendo championship was an enormous advertisement, it pretty much sold me Mario Maker by itself, you guys should really give it a chance
The capture card is a fair point I suppose, but at the same time does raocow really need to LP a contest for it to exist
Also I just did not get any of your second paragraph because it couldn't have been more vague

That's the first time I've heard about Mario Maker possibly causing trouble with other mario level editors and that sure is something pretty worrying about this game. I'm pretty curious about how it could have affected magl x2 at this point in time but it sounds like something pretty shitty... :/

Did you put a Goomba's Stilleto in the postgame and Nintendo personally contacted you and told you not to?? I mean... what?

Yeah, what I don't get even more is that I just went a bit on the SMBX forums, there's noone talking about any "legal" issues or whatever with nintendo, they even seem to be embracing mario maker or giving them inspiration
And why would it be only removing a small part of the contest and not the whole thing?? And why a small contest buried in the depths of the internet instead of the whole engine???

and why the postgame, which the public doesn't even know about?

"Mario Maker" will never be able to make what we saw today on the raocow video. I do hope that it will wake up more level designers though. When people hit the limits of that game, I'm hoping that they will seek other engines to feed their level making needs.

I went on the SMWCentral forums, and people seem to be quite a bit cynical about SMM despite it pretty much being only a level editor like SMBX, and having zero to do with actually SMW hacking, and customization. I mean hell, why are people giving Nintendo shit for giving us a beefed up version of their Mario level editor tools pretty much.

Gonna have to side with this. Excuse my ignorance, but I see no way how an official level editor has any influence over MaGL's postgame.

I won't say anything more without Otane's say so. It's up to her if she wants to rant about it or not.

so what youre saying is that there was going to be a level in the postgame that involved uploading videos of a romhack onto niconico
seriously though the only way i could see this being the case was if it involved things other than raocow playing smbx. and raocow playing smbx is what maglx2 IS, right? if not than what the fuck
this is affecting my mental illness badly tbh

If you don't want to talk about it you shouldn't have mentioned it at all just saying
And as leet said I don't see what this has to do with niconico..

Yeah, my thoughts are: no matter how many gimmicks/cool stuff Nintendo adds to the game, unless there's a way to move beyond that (like with smbx events or asm) it's gonna get old. Even the vanilla contest uses custom pallets/music, which spices things up.
I'll still buy it, though.

Yes. The experiment itself will create some good content too, and we will hopefully learn something from it. It does have a lot more creativity that some of the recent NSMW games, which were mostly repeating themselves at this point.

Mario Maker will lag behind SMBX and rom hacking on three fronts:
(1) Aesthetic options
(2) World Building
(3) The ability to go beyond the programming (opening up new avenues and options years after the games release)
Having said that, Mario Maker looks like a must buy.
(1) It's polished as all get out (both as an editor and from a gameplay front)
(2) The new gameplay elements and slew of options puts vanilla SMBX and Mario World to shame (not to mention the NSMB franchise)
(3) It should have a much larger community than the online Mario fangame community. Bigger community = more levels and more people playing your levels
Short of legal action, Mario Maker won't destroy the online Mario Fan Game community. The limitations of an official builder will prevent that. But then I still enjoy messing around with Mario Paint despite access to much better art and music programs, so I suspect Mario Maker will have legs on it for years to come. This game will probably be the Wii U's crowning jewel, short of something spectacular popping up over the next year or two. And judging by this year's E3, that ain't happening.
