Pokemon Race: 3 hours in

Post by Septentrion Pleiades »

The race has began, but it's not too late to enter. You just need to get two hours done.
Should we do a video game race?

I was thinking maybe a randomized FireRed/Red race with 4 contestants. Everyone will have to figure out how to record on their side, and we can do a live commentary over Skype.
I would be totally up for that. We'd have to have like, schedules though, cause I doubt we all have the time to just sit down and play through the entirety of FireRed/Red/whatever else

Aaaaah.

I think it would be a good idea to do a race on a game that one can do in a single sitting.

(Granted if you're hardcore enough you can do a race on anything in a single sitting, but you know what I mean. Something that can be done in perhaps an hour.)

I definitely like the idea of Talkhaus videogame race contests though!

They could do that anyway even with your method.

Certain level of trust is required.

Plus, if it was me, I'd personally try and get people together who could record, so we could put together all the perspectives and make a video!

This is an option. Latias/Beldum/Lavatar is an example. I could also make the normal starters much stronger, which would be and make it go by much faster. Dragon charizard, Dragon Venusaur, steel Blastiose
We could also throttle the game as 150% to make it go by quicker.

Even at 150% speed it's a bit ambitious for a first Talkhaus race. I think for now you should choose something linear. Besides, with linear you have the fun of calling out what stage you're at, and in Pokemon that doesn't work so well since you might be ahead in location but behind in levels or pokemon diversity so it's harder to gauge positions as you're going.

Well it is a decent hack but sometime its just too repetitif there no level that actually pop in your face and your like oh yeah that level they all ressemble themselves and just monster along the way.

Because "Hey I defeated Brock!" isn't a signifier of any sort of progress. Pokemon is one of the easiest game to gauge. It's totally linear until lavender town, and even then progress is pretty easy to gauge after that point with badges and stuff. If someone does have better team, then they will caught up. It's not like you can quickly pull through from the 4th badge to the endgame.

I do think we can go with the super starters method and plow through everything, and it would be easy to take breaks.
Leet wrote:race ASMT
That would take much longer than pokemon.

Insanely different familiarity. If this was a metriod forum, this might work. It is however not.

Mmmm, it's certainly a good idea to just set up a race perhaps and see who wants to do it with you.

That's what I'll be doing anyway, instead of this turning into a vote and veto kind of thing based on whether someone thinks a race will work or not.

Who is actually interested a pokemon race? I was thinking two/one hour sessions starting march 2nd. I've been thinking about not having video requirements and just sending .sav files(we can base it on game time). We could have a text update system instead of a massive video thing. We could have over a dozen contestants with that system.

For the game itself, I was thinking hacking the starter species to be stronger (aka stronger charmander, but still charmander) and forget the randomizer. What are people's opinions on this? Also, if I do make the starters stronger, what abilities and elements would people prefer?

How about we race in Black/White 1 or 2? It's much faster, would look nicer on video and just overall more fun.

I have had trouble emulating gen 5, and I don't think everyone could do that. I don't really see any advantages, but tons of disadvantages: Cutscenes, story, infamiliarity, less hackable.

The full five miles? Randomized elements, Random movepool, Wild pokemon, Trianer Pokemon. abilities, TM?

This will probably take a bit more democracy before I make the hack.

Of course we don't even know if we are going to do videos since no one is saying they are participating.

I have no problem emulating gen 5, you only need the right config and it works great. Also there aren't THAT many cutscenes, at least not in 2, and besides, you almost don't even need HM slaves except for strength, surf and fly which are pretty good attacks anyways. It's also very easily hackable.

Personally I would only do a Pokemon one if it was legit.

But that's just me, it seems.

I wouldn't mind doing full-on randomiser. It could end up hilarious...or disastrous.

Except for typing changes, no typing changes.....and no early Wonder-guard

Are you against the idea of all hacking? I have plans for the powerful starters to make it difficult at the end.
Clemasterable wrote:I wouldn't mind doing full-on randomizer. It could end up hilarious...or disastrous.
But it has the chance of being disastrous for everyone, especially if we are using the same ISP file.

Having done pokemon races in the past, of multiple gens, it's good fun, but yes a tad time consuming. I use a lua script for true randomization of wild pokemon.

Sticking my head in to say I'd be up for a randomizer (or normal for that matter) Pokemon race. Sounds like a ton of fun.

unless im too late then never mind

edit: Would we be doing a Nuzlocke? Or would that be going a bit far?
