YOU LIKE SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI?
YOU LIKE PERSONA?
WELL THIS IS THE THREAD FOR YOU!!! This thread is here to discuss any of the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series. Yes, this includes those really obscure Japanese ones from the SNES too and all the spin offs like Persona 4 Arena and that new dance game that kind of looks cool but also really tacky...
I digress, all of those games are welcome to be talked about!!
I've seen ideas to translate it somewhere but I don't remember where. It looks like a fun game, and for some reason SNES dungeon crawlers feel a lot more creepy than their 3D counter parts. I tried playing it but it proved to be too much kanji for me and I bailed.
The backstory seems interesting and I wish there was a proper translation for the game. :c
This thread has garnered a significant amount of my hell and a correspondingly high proportion of my yeahs. I've only played the more recent ones (Persona 3 FES, Persona 4, Devil Survivors 1 & 2, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, and those weird Demikids games) but I've very much enjoyed all of them, although DDS and DDSII were just too easy to justify the somewhat not-so-amazing execution of the plot.
I think for me, the real appeal of the games is difficulty. As a longtime jrpg player, I can sleepwalk through most games of the genre, and occasionally that makes them lose their appeal for me despite how much fun I have stat crunching. I tend to no-death run a lot of them. So, walking around every corner in Nocturne knowing full well that there is a realistic chance I'll get tpk'd by random mobs and a very realistic chance that the first attempt at any boss will be spent figuring out a strategy for the inevitable future tries is a great feeling. Complacency, man. It ruins everything.
That said, I would be lying if I said I didn't want to headbutt some of the VAs.
I played Persona 3 Portable a while back, and I completely fell in love with the series. Persona 4 Golden came next, and I intend on playing 2 eventually.

On Expert. Only then are you considered a fan. I accept no less. :colbert:
i haven't actually played on hard yet oops
I learned my lesson playing Nocturne on expert. I died on the first encounter
Haha, what a casual. On my first playthrough, I picked Expert and made it to the THIRD encounter before dying the first time! [/sarcasm]
But yeah, oof. SMT games are rough on their hardest difficulties. Good thing I have a slightly masochistic side to help me truck through them. And the feeling when you finally beat it... :O
I personally prefer persona 3 to 4. I guess I liked the atmosphere in 3 better, though not controlling your allies is... problematic.
My favorite SMT game, though, is definitely SMT 4. Once again, this is mostly a case of atmosphere, because the demons in SMT 4 are kinda homogenous.

Huzzah!
Although, P3 is my favorite SMT as well, followed closely by Nocturne, and then IV.
But always glad to see someone who appreciates P3. :3
