AGDQ 2014 HYPE!!

If you don't know what this is already: AGDQ is an annual one-week charity marathon happening in early January, raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The Prevent Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that saves lives through cancer research, education and community outreach. It will feature lots and lots of speedruns, totaling about 160 hours.

As you might have heard, our very own Alex is attending and will provide commentary on a Super Mario Wolrd tool-assisted speedrun performed by a bot on a real SNES (correct me if I'm wrong, Alex). That should happen @8:25 p.m. Eastern on the first day.

So if you have time to spare, check it out and spread the word!

My personal recommendations (from runs I have already seen) for start of the marathon include Pikmin 3, Super Monkey Ball 2, Cave Story, the TAS block, the Banjo Kazooie run, the entirety of the Megaman block, and the Yoshi's Island run (definitely don't miss that if you haven't seen it yet, Alex will agree!).

I'm kinda bummed out that so many great things will happen when I'm asleep. Too much awesome!

(It starts tomorrow)

This totally deserves to be its own thread, especially since we'll probably end up commenting a lot on when Alex is on, and so I have made it so.

Like magic.

Of course I have a stupid training course starting tuesday hdofjbhwjsbhjd

Is the SMW TAS run the super-glitched one that loads the ending screen at Yoshi's Island 3? That's going to be pretty short if it is?

I guess I'll turn off the french restream during the TAS just for alex !!

I really want to see Majora's Mask and pokemon (I won't be here for pokemon though, ugh)

I'm kind of curious about the Age of Empires and Mario Kart 64 runs, these are games I wasn't even suspecting were runned at all

AGDQ almost makes me want to pick up a speedgame again.

Btw, I'm eager to see Yoshifan's SMG2 run. I once scratched the surface of that game, and it's really tough, 'cause there aren't really any "easy" levels where you can lay back. Some flutters are just atrocious, and the most ridiculous one is right at the end. I think I got a 5:30:?? back then, which is two (!) hours slower than Yoshifan's PB. Yoshifan's a beast, though.

Also, Alex, I guess we can see you at the YI run, too? At least on the "extended couch" that is the front row of seats? I'm really eager to see Carl's donation incentive. Oh man, that run is so ridiculous, and it'll get even better with marathon-quality commentary.

I'm definitely going to try to get in there, but camping is frowned upon. I can possibly talk to trihex about reserving one of those seats for me, but I'm not certain that he can.
I guess you'd be alright if it's just for YI.
The Dictator aka Mike wrote:-Don't hog the couch. The couch is for the runner(s) and the couch commentator(s), and just a hunch, but I don't think anyone can be a runner or couch commentator for every run. This also applies to the two rows behind the couch. Those rows are an extension of the couch and can be decided by the runner. Also, there's plenty of space to watch the runs on the projectors, so take one of those seats instead if you intend on watching for a while.

...It starts tomorrow? My plane ride starts tomorrow! Dang it, I thought the marathon would start further into January... Well, at least I probably won't miss seeing alex.

I don't even remember what's on the schedule this year (aside from one of the only Touhou games that isn't essentially an autoscroller) but I know for sure there are a lot of things I want to watch because there always are and most of the time I end up watching at least half of the recordings that went on in any given marathon. Mostly because my computer usually handles watching recordings much better than watching livestreams anyway, but there's always going to be something special I try to catch anyway! (probably Typing of the Dead this time around, and the TAS block too)

...You know, these events... They're really uplifting. Seeing speedruns being done by a bunch of people who are having a good time is nice on its own, but the way the entire point of these events is to raise money for charity is really what makes these marathons so special. I don't think I'd enjoy them nearly as much if the speedrunners weren't all working towards such a goal.

We also added in Mario Kart 64 at the last minute. We ended up console-verifying it and it's so amazing that we just had to add it in. As a result, SM64 was taken out and is now in the bid-war with SMB3.
SM64 of all things, really? I mean sure it isn't siglemic, but I thought it was one of the most hyped AGDQ games.

That is amazing.

If there's one thing I've heard people hate in large group settings, especially in stuff like cons, it's BO.

Looks like somebody brought Cirno in this time.

Is it just me, or is this a different room than AGDQ used to be in? It looks a lot larger, though maybe it's just the different camera angles or lighting.

Also hi alex I don't know which person you are but I'm pretty sure we see you now!
