In the most sad and depressing way possible. Oh sure, Hammer Bro Demo 3 is an hilariously bad ROM hack and has already kind of cloned carol's game in the most blatant way possible with its special world and endgame levels, but this is just way past that.

What is it?

Super Mario Kollision, or is I like to jokingly call it, Brutal Mario as if it was made on Birdemic's special effect budget.

Seriously, it just has to be seen to believed. As mentioned in this blog review, the game is pretty much as blatantly trying to copy Brutal Mario as it can come, and just does an hilariously bad job of it.

Heck, he doesn't even bother to hide it:

So what's so terrible about this? Well how about this hilariously bad attempt at trying to copy the Dark Lich boss, except without that pesky ASM part?

Image

Or his attempt at trying to mimic the Castle bridge from Brutal Mario's version of Bowser's Castle?

Yeah, it looks a little less impressive when you can't rip any graphics yourself. It'd wouldn't be so bad if the level wasn't a poor attempt at copying the level piece by piece, but alas it is/was. You go through the hallway with the statues, but he was too low budget to get the laser sprite. Or the roto disc sprites. Or the quickman laser stuff, so you just immediately end up in the bit with the Tonberries, which just happen to be gfx edited Dino Rhinos. You've got stuff like the outside area with the moon, except there's Big Boo included instead because hey, adding new sprites are apparently too difficult. You get the bridge, but with the above shoddy graphics and Kirby's Adventure Rainbow Resort music instead of Castle Pandemonium. You even fight Bowser, except he could only add SMB 1 Bowser, so you have to break the turn block floor yourself.

Seriously, the thing just has to been seen to be believed, because damn it's hilarious how poorly many of the 'stolen' ideas are implemented. Indeed, until I came across this and that other hack, I didn't exactly know shoddy knockoff copies of ROM hacks were exactly a thing. Here's the link (which will probably end up broken when the game's removed soon):

So, anyone else came across any other hacks that went this far in trying to copy someone else's work? Because there's now at least two on SMW Central's waiting to be moderated list, so it'd be interesting to see if any more show up.

Wait, someone tried to make a clone of Brutal Mario without ASM when the only good thing in brutal Mario IS the ASM ?
Hahaha. Why. Why did he do that?

Your guess is as good as mine. Probably found Brutal Mario 'interesting' and so tried to mimic it, right before realising he didn't anywhere near the required level of technical skill to pull it off.

Still, it seems to be surprisingly common within the Portugese and Japanese communities, for different reasons. You've got that Hammer Bro Demo 3 game which I mentioned earlier blatantly try to steal other people's ideas and level designs and failing miserably, you've got the Japanese Ore World games which seem like they're trying to be the poor man's version of Brutal Mario... heck, even old Scarlet Devil Mario 2 edges a bit close at times..

Then again, according to the credits, he actually made the OTHER Brutal Mario knockoff Hammer Bro Demo 3:

minhas hacks em andamento means 'My Hacks in Progress'. The submitter names on SMW Central also match.

Hooray for improving quality of plagiarism I guess? He did at least go from an hilarious bad clone of Brutal Mario level...

To a slightly technically more impressive but also blatantly bad clone of a different Brutal Mario level:

He also unfortunately discovered the 'wonders' of music porting, leading to the absolute disaster that are the ports in the other topic:

So yes, we go from cloning Super Mario Frustration (his first hack), to badly attempting to clone Brutal Mario, to ripping off Brutal Mario, Super Mario Frustration, Kaizo Mario World and VIP 4 in the same game, with poorly done music ports and better attempts at ripping the graphics. Wonder if his next game will say 'inspired by ASMT' or something?
