Street Fighter X Mega Man

Post by Cadwyn »

Now that the game is out, figured I'd start a topic on it. I played about an hour last night, mostly getting a feel for it. For me, Mega Man games are always the hardest when I first start them, as I'm completely clueless about boss orders and weapon exploits so it's mostly just getting used to the stages and which bosses are beatable with my skill to move on.

That said, I'll start with the negative, or at least problematic; unlike a lot of others, I don't really mind the lack of saves or passwords, but the controls gave me an issue from the getgo as for some reason the game didn't let me use the D-pad on my Xbox controller, and using the analog stick for a 2D game leads to a lot of accidental slides and ladder climbing shenanigans. I suppose using JoyToKey will solve that, so I'll try it next time.

...now for the positive. I LOVE the bosses in this game so far! The addition of a super move gauge made it feel like a combination of a fighter and platform shooter, and was much more enjoyable than the "turns red" style of boss patterns that only kick in the uber moves when they're low on health. Very nice touch! So far the only bosses I've fought are Chun-Li (good starting point IMO), Blanka and Ryu. Got my ass kicked by both of them, but I could see how you're supposed to fight them so it's just encouraging. Boss AI is definitely a strong point of this game. Stage design seemed kinda typical, though I'm not used to the enemies being so numerous at times, it's understandable given the Mega Buster can take them out quickly. Oh, and the weapon get screen... I won't spoil it if you haven't seen it, but you'll know what I'm referring to when you do. :D

So, anyone else playing this? Got boss order recommendations? Favorite stages?

I saw Roahm Mythril's LP of the game and wasn't terribly impressed. It falls into the same trap as a lot of Mega Man games where a lot of the subweapons are either really unwieldy (Lightning Kick, the watermelon thing) or feel like a slightly powered up Mega Blaster (Hadoken, Optic Laser). The inability to save your progress is also a strike against it.

Marks in its favor are cool level design, a good selection of Street Fighter characters as bosses, and as you said, good boss AI.

That said, I don't think it's a bad game. I'd say it's on about the same level as the original Mega Man. If it had a saving system and better balanced weapons it could have been on the level as 2 or 3.

Man, I played it for an hour, and I somewhat liked it, BUT... the lack of saving drives me to not finish this game...

Yeah, I wasn't too keen on not having a save feature either. The fact that it was an intentional design decision is baffling as just about every fan game or hack nowadays utilizes a password or post-stage save function. Boss fights are fun, stage design less so, but it's okay as a fan game.

My complaints with it are few, but they are glaring.

1. Lack of save feature. This means people have to defeat this in one sitting, whoch some are unable to do.

2. The second Bison-boss. Along with his weakness being something hard to hit him with, he was incredibly fast and powerful, making him positively annoying to fight.

3. Lack of Guile. The fact that both Guile AND Guile's theme isn't in this hack, automatically akes a fair bit of points off.

That said, The rest of the game was good. My favorite part in particular was the
Balrog fight. Seriously, one of the most creative stages I've ever seen.

Guile's theme is in the game. You just have to enter a code on the title screen to get it to play. I don't think it ever goes away once you put it in, though.

V2 is out now, also, the soundtrack is available (for free) too.

Code: Select all

As before, head to the Mega Man group page for the free download. Don't forget you can also grab the entire soundtrack for free as well :)

-Confirmation prompt before exiting (ESC) or resetting (F12) the game

-E Tank glitch and various other bugs fixed

-Improved controller support (Game defaults to keyboard on launch; make sure controller is plugged in prior to opening the file, then go into Options menu and set keys)

-Take screenshots using F9

-M Bison buffed a bit (This place shall become your grave!)

-A new challenger! (Find him yourself!)
*EDIT*
Just noticed that my copy/paste doesn't tell you the most important part!
There is now a propper Mega Man password system to cuntinue from your last game

That damn money box popped up for soundtrack download and I felt guilty I couldn't even give a dollar so I x'd out haha. I only played 1 stage when the game first came out so I don't even know how it is.

I should probably try this again when I'm feeling better. Those fixes actually make the game more manageable as it wasn't fun to go all the way through in one go. Those end game stages were not fun in spots, most notably Vega and the refights.
