Video game music is such a special thing to me. I think that being a composer of video game music would be my all time dream job. I'll admit I haven't read this whole thread yet, but I wanted to put in a couple standout songs that are my favorites. Also, please excuse me if I format something wrong or anything, I'm new and am getting used to this forum still.

Chrono Cross: Absolutely GORGEOUS soundtrack that can still make me well up tears for some tracks.

Prisoners of Fate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd7ggm04GFo

Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU5aMM88_64

Magical Dreamers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU5aMM88_64

Final Fantasy: Grew up with the series and still love it, there are many awesome tracks, but I'll list some of my favorites here that are not as popularized (I think).

FF6: Magitek Research Facility https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAf087gh1c4

FF7: Forested Temple https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2YJpKUARA4

FF8: Starting Up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wThnQM2WDVk

FF9: Geez, the whole soundtrack lol but especially You're Not Alone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKAoSY5bhSw

I could go on forever with FF but won't...

Megaman: Yeah, another series FULL of awesome music!

MM4: Pharoah Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMrjBaP-olQ

MM5: Gravity Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9sOiROSpNU

MM9: Tornado Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTvjc12new0

M10: Nitro Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doxUxFs ... A&index=23

I'll stop my post here for now, but so much more to share!

God, how have I forgotten about Goof Troop (SNES) for so long that game's sound track had some of the most amazing music in a video game to date and it contains one of my top 3 video game songs:
Lose My Way

Sooo I have been playing a bit of Borderlands The Pre-Sequel lately and I have to admit,
this song is one of the best I heard so far.

(Spoilers. Obviously.)

The "Combat" theme starts at about 1:30. It just fits the atmosphere of the level. (A moon base, taken over by a rebelious legion. And 4 mercenaries to stop them.)
And here is a close Number 2:

(Again, spoilers.)

Again, this one fits the atmosphere of the area perfectly. The area is exactly what it says on the tin. A research complex with lots of hostile creatures.

I love how you picked the one I've actually listened to out of all the choices from that channel.

Played through Dungeon Explorer in its entirety last week. Had an absolute blast. I've been experiencing all notable PC Engine games at once recently, and it's amazing.

Channel logo got me into:

Unlike Konami's Parodius, it's all original music. It's all very quorky, hilarious, feelgood and intense at once (might wanna skip that long intro).

Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is an overlooked collect-athon platformer game , probably because its a licensed game based on a kid's show. However this game is surprisingly really fun, to the point where I recently re-bought it and fully completed it. It has great level designs, really great comedic dialog, and can even be surprisingly difficult at times without resorting to fake difficulty.
But one of the best things in the game is the music. In most licensed games, the music is usually like a 30 second loop. In this case, you usually get a full 3 minute loop of some well crafted music, like this one that plays on the first stage.

Here are a few Pokemon songs I like:

Legendary Battle (Diamond, Pearl and Platinum):

Black City from Pokemon Black (couldn't find an extended version :():

Champion Battle Theme (pretty much hyped for the remixed one but I ain't spoil myself until I get there):

Frontier Brain [(from Emerald) same hype applies to this song]:

and last but not least:
N Battle Theme (again, no extended version :S):

Earthworm Jim 2 was another game with a pretty good sound track but one song kinda sticks out...

Oh man, Lorenz Soil was so frustratingly hard as a kid, and this music was totally enough to keep me coming back. The main instruments have this kinda... "hopeful" quality over this dark, wet background.

Wario Land 4's soundtrack had such a varied set of outstanding music, from fun and jaunty tunes like Toy Block Tower

to calming and emotional pieces like Monsoon Jungle

and god damn if it didn't have the best frikken staff roll theme of anything ever
I know it's pretty much just slightly edited level themes but there's something about it; especially that intro and the Toy Block Tower remix, ahhg, they're just so good.

Cont' FVGM Playlist.

If you were watching any of that on youtube you may have noticed that all of those songs were uploaded just recently over the last few days to my account that's because I uploaded crisp, High Fidelity versions of the all of WL4's songs from midi files and soundfonts extracted from the rom and without the sound filtering the GBA/emulators have, I did this mostly because I wanted my own FVGM playlist to have good sounding sound for my own use. Well... you can listen to it heeeeeeeeeeeeeere.

Oh lawd, where do I even begin with this? There is so much to cover here. Music is, in my opinion, one of the defining characteristics of any game, and always one of my favorite parts. I'd just like to recognize a few tracks and games.
Touhou:
Satori Maiden~3rd Eye

Green-Eyed Jealousy

Megaman:
There's a lot of Megaman to list, especially in 9, but this track is probably my favorite of the series.

F-Zero:
F-Zero X has one of the most metal soundtracks in any game, and for that I love it.
Crazy Call at Cry (Port Town)

Decide in the Eyes (Big Blue)

Rainbow Road (I think this was on the 64DD?)

That being said, F-Zero GX's more electronic approach was pretty awesome too.

Planet Colors

Sonic Adventure 2 definitely has some memorable tracks, partly from nostalgia, but City Escape remains one of my favorite video game songs.

Metroid:
Metroid Prime is one of my favorite game series, so it's no surprise that the final boss themes of the first two games would make the list.

The last boss theme from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time really stands out to me because it's so dark and epic, more so than you would expect from a Mario game.

Bowser's Inside Story, on the other hand, stands out to me for just being a super fun sounding last boss fight.

DKC:
David Wise did an absolute wonderful job in the original DKC series, and Stickerbrush Symphony is easily one of my favorites.

Gear Getaway from DKC Returns is another favorite

Kid Icarus: Uprising
Kid Icarus: Uprising has such an amazing score to me, especially because air battles are semi-railroaded, so the music is composed to sync up with events. But, I'll keep this list slightly shorter by just adding my favorite track of the game:
Destroyed Skyworld

Kirby:
Y'know, for being a game about a little pink ball, Kirby has a lot of really epic music.
Sky Sands

Checker Knights

And finally, C.R.O.W.N.E.D., the theme of the last boss in Kirby's Return to Dreamland. I really had to save this song for last.

Image
So here we are. Plays have been enacted. Empires have come and gone. The mightiest have passed away and withered, alike the least. Fires have burned, thousandfold. Yet, did not the great wind serenely continue its course? Does not the blackbird still sing its song? Does not the mistletoe still dwell in the oak's crown? Forgotten, what once has been told. Veiled, the words that once so rang out. Shrouded, like the larva in its cocoon. Let him hear it, who will.
