Got to the end of Animal Well. Nice short experience, took me a bit over 5 hours. It weirdly pushed right up against my limits of "how was I supposed to figure that out"? With only one small thing I looked up to confirm my theory before trying something that would have been a bit tedious for an experiment

You have to take the mock disk to the alter labeled "mock disk" but I couldn't remember it was called that, the alter just says "M DISK" which I thought maybe meant "magic disk" and was the one I had? But doing that whole run being chased by the ghost cat guy would have been tedious to try if it turned out to not be the solution so I just looked it up to confirm that's what it wanted, and indeed I was correct)

I very conveniently found out about a technique that was pretty necessary at just the right time

you can basically fly with the bubbles by launching one just as you jump off the last one. Probably should have been obvious but I didn't figure it out until my last play session somehow)

. Felt kinda lucky with how the whole playthrough went. But it was a lot of fun and I felt rewarded solving puzzles.

But there's a bunch of collectibles and a few extra achievements, so I plan to just use a guide to finish it off. It's fun but I don't think there's really a strategy for finding all the eggs. I can think of better uses of my time than endlessly wandering the map for the remaining eggs.

Anyway, yeah. Good game, play it.

Baldur's Gate Trilogy: Largely worked on a bunch of sidequests today to get some magical weapons. And also another suit of Ankheg plate (Jaheira's wearing this set) as well as the "Bardic Chain" that Myr'Cutio wears. Unfortunately I also picked up a couple more reloads - I need charm protection along the coastline in order to invade the sirene caves, and Myr'Cutio killed me on attempt #2 with a confusion spell (attempt #1 was ages ago and it was more to find out if he was susceptible to mundane weapons). Currently up to six reloads. Anyway all of this to say it's time to go to the Bandit Camp.

S3&K > Sonic 2 > Sonic 1 > Sonic CD for me, from best to worst. Though objective arguments on game quality aren't a thing at all most of the time.
Same ranking here, though I will say that CD's US soundtrack is one of my favorites in the series so it has that going for it at least!!

More of a JP CD soundtrack guy (New Jack Swing and Piano House... drool) but some of the US tracks aren't bad either.

Saw some streamers doing Castlevania games, and that caused me to try Castlevania Legends since I had just updated the Game Boy games on the Switch. This is definitely going to be one of those better than the first but not close to the second kind of deals here after a couple stages. Can already tell.

Final Fantasy X International - idk why but i was grinding in Mi'ihen.

Very upset that Kimahri seems to be taking the longest to level up. Thankfully you don't need a lot of the sphere grid for normal gameplay, it's just that I want to do Penance and shit lmao

Oh yeah no people don't really like CV Legends, even beyond the complications of shipping Sonia with Dracula (which Konami did again on Lords of Shadow by technicality). KCE Nagoya moment, though I think I heard GBC Azure Dreams is alright.

I want a female Belmont in a good game but. Lmao @ Castlevania getting a new game again. Thank god for Miriam in Bloodstained and to a lesser extent cool gals like Sypha, Carrie and Shanoa.

You mean with Alucard, right? I'm sure that's what you meant but I'm clarifying more for a don't knowing third party that might take it at face value and get grossed out and then even more so at what I'm about to say if not for this disclaimer.

I do find it interesting how every canonical instance of a non-Belmont killing Dracula involves them using his own power against him. In Curse of Darkness, Death says the forgemasters all share that power, and there's another source, I'm pretty sure it's the audio follow-up to SOTN, that says the same for Alucard. Meanwhile, Shanoa's case pretty much speaks for itself.

With that in mind, the thought of Trevor being Alucard's son and all the Belmonts secretly being Tepeses by extension could be what really makes them so special? But for that to "really work" you'd need to make all of Legends canon except Sonia managing to kill Dracula herself because she wouldn't have the DNA for it, and that kind of undermines the point of having a strong heroine like her. nyoro~n

I would really like to know who wrote this game's plot tbh. Also I guess that explains why CotM isn't canon bc Nathan is not a Belmont by blood, nor did he use Dracula's power against him. He could just wield the Vampire Killer for some reason.

To be fair that almost happens in Castlevania 64.

Dracula's just a 10 year old half the time in that game and Carrie becomes his future wife in her bad ending if Vincent eats shit.

Smooth fucking move not killing him for good in the first place Cornell

Oh it gets worse.
64's chronologically the last game before the original Bram Stoker novel because that's canon too, and it starts with a Dracula that's just hanging around with no one to challenge him, in a castle largely devoid of monsters. Almost as if the bad ending where they kill the wrong Dracula is actually canon, and Malus made Carrie promise to be his bride. By the time of the novel, Dracula has three brides.

Okay I double checked the book and it describes the brides and none of the descriptions match Carrie. Also come to think of it I don't think calling them "brides" caught on until the second Hammer movie, the book was more vague about what they were to him.

god if konami kobe made a 10 year old spellcaster in castlevania that is Literally Based on a concept for a dracula bride in bram stokula's draculer (obscure chip cheezum retsupurae reference) i would shit my pants in real time

because i know the bram stoker book is canon due to bloodlines (John Morris, i forget how he and quincy are related to the belmonts)

you heard rightly.

I unlocked a new Joker in Balatro last night by forcing an Ankh card to duplicate a polychrome joker, so that's fun (the run died very shortly thereafter, since the duplicated joker really wasn't very strong on its own and I was on a high ante)

Even with a guide, collecting all eggs in Animal Well is kind of a pain. The best-looking text guide with images I found on Google, I spent all this time cross-referencing on paper to write out the eggs I was missing based off their grid system, then started trying to actually use the guide and the eggs so be labelled completely wrong? Like it'd say "egg 3C is here on the map" and I'd go there and it was an egg I already collected, even though 3C was labelled as a completely different egg in their grid at the top.

So I moved onto YouTube videos, there's a couple that show them all but one seems to be in completely random order and the other is alphabetized. Rather than showing in an order that would make sense to grab them. The game hasn't been out long so I guess they were just trying to be first to show them all, and someday there will be better guides. But for now it ain't easy sailing! On top of that, some eggs require optional items to get, some optional items require other optional items that require doing something on the other side of the map, etc.

The map isn't particularly easy to read, sometimes it looks like 2 areas connect but they don't, or it's a 1-way connection and you can't go that way in reverse. You end up doing a lot of platforming challenges over again. There's a few vertical shafts in the game that have various connections to different rooms, and you may only be able to access from a specific room. There's also warp pipe type things in the game that can take you from one end of the map to another, so even though an egg is technically in one room on the map, you access it from the other end of the map.

I figured it'd be a chill thing I could do while listening to podcasts but I'm spending so much time cross-referencing my list of eggs to collect, items to collect, routing myself around, trying to remember how to get some platforms to move another way, or access a specific room, it's actually requiring some brainwork.

Adding to the NSO games along with Castlevania Legends, I booted up the N64 one. Wave Race didn't click, but of all things, Pokémon Puzzle League is since it's Tetris Attack in style as well as Sin & Punishment. Kind of weird that last one didn't make it stateside since it has English VA, but I guess that was in a more family-friendly era for Nintendo.

Super Mario Bros. - I beat Deluxe! And it's probably the only version where I'll bother with Beetle Mode, so that should hopefully go a lot faster too. And then with Challenge Mode I think I'll only go for the coins and eggs, since the score thing is already enough of a pain in 1-1.

Yeah turns out same day I wrote this someone posted a way better guide than the other ones.

Also turns out

there is a way to fast travel. Or at the very least fast travel to the screen with all the portals which is good enough. I probably never would have figured it out on my own but it's made things way faster. Got all but a couple eggs in a 2.5 hour session.

Oracle of Ages Randomizer: Another seed in the done pile. This one I had to look up the spoiler log for, since the item flag I needed to follow up on (Goronade) was hidden by an item flag I couldn't actually do anything else with (Old Mermaid Key) - I had the former and forgot because the menu only shows the latter if you have both. tl;dr: use a damned tracker.

Baldur's Gate Trilogy: Bandit Camp cleared out, time to begin the interminable march through the Cloakwood. I actually ate a reload that wasn't due to player death this time - on the first attempt an NPC that I needed/wanted kept alive got caught in my opening fireball.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Got the Piece of Heart at the Graveyard, the Lost Woods Skull Tokens, the Cucco owner's empty Bottle, wrapped up the Skull Tokens in Kakariko, Adult Wallet, Sun's Song, the Piece of Heart in the room under the grave, the Piece of Heart from the giant pot in Goron City, and super cleared Dodongo's Cavern. Gonna do [Wlk7] on this guide afterwards.

Cozy game, but the camera has aged.

EDIT: Oh yeah the way the Gorons and Darunia are super friendly and openly caring to Link are reducing me to tears (i have daddy issues).

Baldur's Gate Trilogy: Fucking ettercaps. It took me two more reloads just to get through the Cloakwood Spiders nest, and that's just with passing through it. I am not looking forward to dealing with Centeol and her goons on the way out. On the plus side, I'm falling in love all over again with bardic spell progressions - monster summoning spells are proving exceptionally helpful, and I get six per rest (three from Bhaard and three from Garrick)

Got the secret ending in Animal Well, and did the extra rabbit stuff for the heck of it. It seems like all those rabbit puzzles were like a community effort thing, so I was just following a guide that's like "go to this room and plays this song" and creating in-game pixel art, having no idea why. But whatever.

Got all the achievements. I think there's one more final final final puzzle the community had to solve but I don't think you get anything for it. Also figurines, some of which are tied to speedrun challenges I'm not really interested in doing. Whatever!

Thinking I might get into Elden Ring soon in preparation for Shadow of the Erdtree coming out next month. I haven't played the game since it came out, so I'm gonna make a new character and get a build together for then.

Also Thousand Year Door comes out in a few days so I'll probably be playing that.

Hydlide 2 (PC88) - Strength and Magic maxed out and change. Gonna buy the Lamp and some Oil rope?? bombs?? and do the actual main questline. Already got the key for the tower north of the desert.

The FORTH (karma) meter feels like such an afterthought, like more than morality systems in modern RPGs do. But to be fair, grinding on NPCs for only gold is much better than grinding on Ghouls for both gold and EXP in the early game, give or take gaining a few levels from the Ghouls.

Literally took to killing Sandworms, which worsen your karma and are actively really easy to get killed by, just for the level up to cap off my Strength in the Ascetic Temple (which is literally just an LCD handheld-style boxing minigame).

It has some neat stuff but, Hydlide 2 is the worst one.

Gonna try to sleep more bc I'm feeling like shit rn

Hydlide II (PC88) - Got the Laser Sword (between this and the FORTH meter I think you can tell what movie was hot shit at the time. it was probably SW6), and honestly I'm just going back to get some proper gear before tackling further dungeons, even if it takes me fifty years to get the money ($30000 for Plate Armor, $10000 for Life Shield, $6980 for Helmet). I don't care. Safety Strat.

Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram - whoever invented bosses in fighting games should be tortured by the war criminal government of the usa in guantanamo bay i am pissed the fuck off rn trying to murder my daughter, tangram over here and i've gotten time'd out and bad ending'd twice

EDIT: kinda pyrrhic victory on OraTan bc. i had to place a checkpoint save so timing out on tangram wouldn't shunt me back to the title screen fuck you and also i had to ask my mom to get me a pillow to place my wrist on bc my worn out dogshit desk was killing my wrist. it is literally red rn. heart's still racing and im still kind of feeling a lot of emotions but. 6/5 game, cleared as my mech-husband (gay way) raiden. it still owns.
