Re: What games are you playing?

Post by Ashan »

There's a Humble Bundle with all the Mega Man Legacy Collections that I nabbed for like $26 yesterday without thinking before I actually checked my Steam library and found out I already had all of the games in the bundle except for ZX Collection and the 2nd half of X Legacy Collection (I bought the first half cause it has the good games). Ended up gifting the remaining games (MMLC1+2, MMXLC1, and Mega Man 11) and also bought Battle Network Legacy Collection with the included 50% off coupon even though I'm pretty sure it's already been on sale for that anyway, and I can't really see myself playing those games on PC (I already own these all on Switch, and in BN's case I own physical copies of all the original games)

But anyway I had a bunch of podcasts to catch up on so I've been playing Mega Man X4 (yes, on the collection I already owned before this bundle) since I only ever played through that game for my first time back when X Legacy Collection originally came out, and ended up thinking it was pretty good. And yup, it's still good even though the FMVs only play for a few seconds before freezing on the PC version (found multiple similar reports online with no solution) because Capcom couldn't possibly put half an ass's worth of effort into these things. You can press start to skip them so the game is still playable but jeez. Oh and you can't map to control the game with the D-pad so I had to use Steam Big Picture Mode's custom input mapping to make my D-pad act like the analogue stick.

I'm playing as Zero cause that's what I was in the mood for. It's an interesting take on the Mega Man formula, to just get moves added to your moveset instead of separate powers you switch between like Mega Man. But I do find it pushed the the Mega Man difficulty contrast to a new level, where I had the most trouble at the beginning when I had the limited moveset (and low health, which I find even more important for Zero where you have to be fighting up close to enemies -- you get hit more), and then by the end I was just flying through levels and bosses. It's an inherent side affect of the classic Mega Man game flow that the first robot master / maverick stages will get easier as you have more abilities, but you really feel it here. Not to mention the abilities you get from Split Mushroom seems so essential compared to basically everything else - the circle air slash AND a double jump! I can't think of any boss ability in other games that are so make or break for how all the other levels will be in terms of difficulty. Because once I had those I felt like I had way more control.

Also funny coincidence that Bean is playing X4 right now too. I hadn't seen you post about it when I started playing yesterday.

Tax Return came in so I was able to pick up Super Smash Bros Ultimate; went with the west branch in World of Light and am currently still getting used to the controls. It feels like the gamecube controls except the face button locations are rotated by a quarter circle clockwise, so I keep hitting A thinking I'm hitting X to jump. Other than that the muscle memory is strong.

Also cycled back to Earthbound - when we last left our heroes, Paula had just been kidnapped. So naturally the solution is to go to a cafe and drink our problems away.

Oh, no. It's less that and just doing another Mega Man type game after nearly burning myself out the last few months with X4. Could've stood to switch it up. That said, this one drops giving you boss powers so it's more just a basic Gradius-style power up run-and-gun with fairly long levels. I'm not sure how I feel about that because 2 was more in line with the style I'm looking to play. 3 feels dialed back in the fun and feels more basic as a result.

Took care of six of the regular eight bosses so far while using a guide to find these magic crystals which help you level up. Think that puts me halfway through The Legend of Dark Witch 3 here.

Tengai Makyou Ziria - hey cocksuckers i'm kinda going through seasonal affective disorder and fucked up circadian rhythm #UmiSonoda

Managed to beat Fuji in a complete fucking depressive daze. Legit was just stoned out of my mind, each random encounter feeling like a nail being pounded in my head, while the underground city within Mt. Fuji was a whole ass bitch in terms of level design. Literally 9 temples surrounded by rings of pillars where some of them were toppled or broken. Itohime was a wet fart.

Freed the White Hawk, and then we headed to Shuzenji Village to deal with Gouyokku, which, 1. he's hot (ugly gross old man), 2. I like how you beat him by siphoning away his money. His non-human form isn't as hot sadly, weird inversion of that trope.

Sagami was a complete meme, it's designed to be textbook annoying and. I kind of love that? The bastard quintuplets emptied out my storage ;; Beat up Yashahime, freed the White Wolf and then we were shit canned in Gokumon Island. The corrupt priest was hot too. We stole a bunch of gold bars, and like forced our way out by blasting the clockwork mechs (you may have seen them in Kabuki Klash) with a giant Doguu Robot we can just carry in our inventory??

Anyway we killed Mutekioh, floated upstream (downstream???) to Chiba, got more gold bars from the nearby Kumogiri Hamlet to get re-equipped with new gear and got An Actual Land Mine that Hoteimaru just buried behind the waterfall (a beloved, mandatory cliché) in Yourou Falls. Freed the White Tiger and White Lion which gave us the best equipment so far (equipment availability is a fucking meme in this game), went through the pipe maze that is Kururi Castle, did Suioumaru in.

We then headed to get the Toad Orb for Ziria and, Suioumaru is back. We kill him again after a few tries. It's Musashi time. Got the Sword of the Divine in Fujimi, which is Ziria's best weapon, beat up Dorokuroki (did not get the hand pump yet though), beat up Antetsuki, Ginrouki, got the Ariake jutsu, beat up Kongouki, and Gen'oumaru/Beliel.

Heading towards Edo now, I beat the Spirit of Kyuubi and Khamen Khamen, but I'm still not done with the refights and such.

I gotta say, Lucifeller is still a bomb ass name.

Well, beat The Legend of Dark Witch 3. Yeah, that was thoroughly mediocre. They dropped picking up your Mega Man powers from bosses and dialed down the Gradius-style level up system, so it just became a run-and-gun with some all right levels and others that were obnoxiously long. Definitely used a guide to find the Not Dragon Coins, but I'm not going to even bother playing as the other character as they only have a very short-range attack. 1 was mediocre in a different way, but for being a 2017 release, 3 feels like a cash out sequel which makes it worse in some ways. Oh well.

Long story short, only the second game gets a slight recommendation in this trilogy from me.

Tengai Makyou Ziria - okay so lucifeller took me like 5 tries phase 1, 7? tries phase 2. and i was using checkpoint saves bc Fuck Redoing Castle Edo

Please be aware that the big reason Lucifeller was a pain is like. He can cast what is essentially Mabufula that always paralyzes and even if you proc a de-freeze he can just cast it again the next turn without letting you act because of how his battle's freezing status works. His physicals also rarely hit (at my level) but Tsunade was at like Lv48, and in the absurdly rare chance it crit she could go down instantly due to being smacked with ~480 HP damage.

I also kept losing track of who defrosted or not, but I guess that's a limitation of the battle system's design. Masakado was basically the Giygas-style "use a certain function repeatedly to win" symbolic final boss, see also Lord Blazer, Yu Yevon. In his case it was the Fire Clan's orbs.

Super good RPG, it's a very fun twist on Dragon Quest's formula and is basically what amounts to taking Momotarou Densetsu, removing the focus on the Peach Boy folk tale and just throwing everything and the kitchen sink into it for the sake of satire rather than just making it a normal jokey Dragon Quest clone. I would recommend this but don't feel bad if you have to use savestates during the end game, it can get a bit Phantasy Star II esque.

Like, if any of you played First Samurai on the Amiga, consider this a sort of Japanese version of it. Or if you're well aware of Goemon, consider this a sort of "taking one of the better Goemon RPGs and making it even more unhinged".

Makes sense Konami owns it now #FreeBloodyRoar2024

Anyway, I found my old Deltarune Ch1 saves and I did start a new Ch2 save from them, so I guess it's time to play catch up. Currently at My Castle Town (THRUSSYtown). I feel more stable so I may be able to beat it this month. Maybe. I also have the VGM contest to get a hold of wrt preparation, so. Please allow me to postpone it a bit for the sake of mental health.

EDIT:
Deltarune Ch2 - Caught up to SCC's shop in an alley after you meet Noelle. I have a minor crush on K_K despite his soft, cutesy aesthetic clashing with my sensibilities (aside from appreciating bullshit with cute girls or kirby or cute 'em ups) and I kind of hate it. I'm more of a kakko-kawaii sort of guy, esp with bara

Let the record show I was literally listening to Ikigusare and looking at nana825763's (PiroPito, the username 666 person) art on their YT Community tab (HEAVY CW FOR PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING, also they use dead insects as an art tool which is fascinating and something I could never do bc I like bugs too much lol)

heavy cw for most things concerning ikigusare as well, but mostly the lyrics so if you don't speak japanese you're 70% immune (but you're also missing out on the appeal)

deltarune is good

I was playing the original asmbxt since the end of the last year and then just quit as I was done with most of the postgame. I wish I could say that I like more than 2/3rds of the game, but I can't. the latter quarter of the game is just relentless with its difficulty to the point that you just get fatigue and don't wanna keep on going

Tales of Destiny PSX - Defeated Lydon at Heidelberg, and we're done with what is essentially the first arc of the game (no lad). Philia's already picked me up at Lienea, heading to Neuestadt so we can head back to Heidelberg to pick up Woodrow (Garr) first, he may be able to gain some levels as we head towards Cresta for Rutee.

I'm trying to listen to what I can understand of the skits, and while they mostly add fluff and character interactions, I feel like I'm less apathetic to the game? I'm just more used to it being kind of a comedic romp that doesn't try to be super deep beyond

people's intentions aren't always what they seem

.

Deltarune Ch2 - Game cleared. Super cute game!!!

not shocked ingame!Kris is the actual villain(?)

Trinity Trigger is just the sort of game I needed. It's basically a budget Secret of Mana in how it plays except without magic so far. It's just being able to unlock weapons for characters, switching to them on the wheel, and upgrading skills as you go. In just a handful of hours, I got to level 20 for the party while collecting every treasure chest I could along the way.

I saw a JRPG youtuber be disappointed by it which, one, I own Mato Anomalies (not the same game but also on their list) thanks to Humble Bundle so oop, but also? I cannot watch most JRPG youtubers because they mostly stick to mainstream shit, my autism just goes haywire. And I'm looking forward to seeing how I feel abt Trin Trig and Mato Anom.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - Still grinding to Lv80 before the Gambler Armband grind. Currently at Lv68? If this had a bestiary I think Lilith's death counter would be maxed out by the end

Tales of Destiny PSX - Got Woodrow (Garr), Rutee, went through Libra IV and

Leon's kinda sad end, like he was a dick but let's be real he was doing all of this for Marian at Hugo's behest. ToD2 shows he regrets everything

. Got Johnny (Karyl) and Kongman (Khang) as my extra characters, picked up the assistent scientist at Otto's Lab, got the Boot Disc west of Lienea, and powered up Radisrol.

I gained a few levels with Woodrow, Johnny and Kongman (and Stahn, by proxy) so they could catch up a bit. I'll probably have to do another grind sesh for the sake of

Igtenos near the end of the game

, even if it's not necessary.

I should remember to pick up the Green Crystal Rod at Cloudius to get to Druaga's shitty condo down the block. I may go ham on following the FAQs for this bc grug

Pondering on continuing Und*rtale, but I feel like my Steam friends list would call me a slur for booting up another Toby Fox game (except for S.N.N. they love that shit /no spite)

I've also renounced any plans to do a completionist run of Tales of Destiny 2 bc completionist runs of Tales games are Bad And Stupid And Stinky and, Eat Poop? I'm just gonna level up for Rimul in the arena and then see if I need to tone down the difficulty to Easy mode for her with the "mysterious adventurer" in Cresta that gives you the Easy mode title, and then just do Magnadeus and the Aqua Labyrinth regardless. I forget how you unlock harder difficulty modes, English documentation on this game is nigh non-existent.

I'll see if my Tales of Eternia save is still existing, for Grandia I'd need to replay like most of the game to get to the optional bullshit that's just. Smack dab in the middle of the New World and then becomes missable (why??).

Tales of Destiny - Ignasea done, Josaia done, Mikheil done, Rodeon done, Helraios done.

Rembrandt and Ilene are fucking dead now, Rembrandt by probably third degree burns from the Grim Reaper 1 exploding and Ilene by like, well she tossed herself from the Mikheil Aeropolis in the Aethersphere so she either burned up in the atmosphere or just a straight death from a high fall a la jumping off a plane.

Spent like two hours getting Igtenos up to speed, he's currently at like Lv35, with Woodrow being at around Lv44. I'll try to get Igten as close to Woodrow as I reasonably can. Everyone's getting close to Lv50, Stahn shot past it. So I only need to do the Giant Disc sidequest to get Phoenix if I want that in my life.

Break for now, will continue grinding Igtenos after this post, because...

Totally Super Mario World YEAHHHH!! - World 3 with Eye's translation, at One Drop of Water in the Vast Desert (広い砂漠 一滴の水). Didn't get the Miso Soup or Ghost House secrets yet, Miso Soup (World 1) leads to the postgame and the W2 Ghost House needs a feather.

Needed a fucking break from ASMT, and also I'm just culling my SMW hack folder. I'm mostly focusing on Standard-Hard/Stand-V. Hard stuff from now on, even if they can dip a bit into Kaizo (savestates are there), I'm just dogshit at SMW Kaizo and it's not my thing beyond Takemoto-style nonsense.

We forgot to translate the Ghost House entrance banner thing Yuga made for this hack (おいでませ, "Come in!"), but it doesn't matter beyond ruining the joke with the exit being "Go away".

Tales of Destiny - Went through the remainder of the game, Deimos (bad dungeon, and Moriarty/Penguin's FAQ for this is dogshit), Cloudius, Belcrant, Trash Mountain, Swordian R&D.

Baruk and Hugo

are beyond dead,

Hugo's death

being kinda sad but Tales is mostly a series aimed at kids so the writing isn't that deep.

Miktran/Kronos will never not feel like he came out of fucking nowhere, he caused the Aeth'er Wars and yet he's a footnote on both ToD games, Lydon and Hugo outshine him in this one, Elraine and Barbatos in the second. Clearly we need a Tales of Destiny 0 Cross: Narikiri Dungeon -Full Voice Edition- ~ Dawn of the New World

Got the Draconis and I've been doing sidequests:
  • made sure to get the Crystal Rods for Druaga
  • got the Combo Command from the Arena bc it's fun
  • got the Golden Seed to trade for the Giant Disc to get Stahn's Phoenix Arte (got all of his btw)
  • did Cress and Arche's quiz
  • visited Sakuraba at Johnny (Karyl)'s house for the Golden Voice Arte
  • fed the Blue Dragon from the Egg I got at Cloudius (I'm like 50% sure Fritz's shitty FAQ forgot to list some of the necessary fish for the chef at Shedeen, I had to buy Smelt or White Smelt, bought both)
  • Pretty much most of the unique warehouse sokoban puzzles done, just didn't do the timed ones
And right now I'm just using Red Savories and Red Sages from Heihachi's other clone's Lens shop to boost my stats before the Tower. R. Bellebanes and Lavenders also raise AGI and STR, respectively, but it's by 2% rather than the R. Savory and Sages' 10% for TP and HP respectively. No thanks.

Not interested in the other minigames, Mind Ring at Blackjack, Elixir from Najasee, score attack in Galaga from Najadee, suffering at the race in Neuestadt, getting the timed Warehouse gifts at Frostheim, hate that shit. I literally have more fun having my blood drawn.

Though I will admit, Najasee's stone minigame sounds kind of fun, but you can only do it once for the Elixir and then no more, so. Why? And grinding score in Galaga for the best items feels unfun as all hell and it'd ruin the minigame for me, I like it a lot.

As a shmup enthusiast, I feel like score attack is most fun when you have beating your personal bests in mind, friendly rivals, or the prospect of being able to play longer in one credit through life extends. It's why score attack (and time attack) works in most old games. It's why speedrunning is engaging. Maybe I'm closed minded?

The seed planting sounds like a nice idea, it reminds me of simpler crafting systems, but it feels like something you'd need a guide for and not worth it unless you want to waste tons of Gald on getting Terras for everyone on your team who can equip one, which you don't really need.

Trinity Trigger continues to move along at a pretty fast clip. It is the exact okay but nothing exceptional game I thought it'd be. Getting more and more weapons unlocked on characters and am apparently already over halfway through the game at this point. Not surprising since these things are usually around 15-25 hours, and that's looking like where this one will wind up unless the dungeons get more elaborate.

Tales of Destiny - Druaga beat, game cleared.

Druaga was a fun dungeon. Almost. For some ungodly reason its treasure unlocking methods are a fuckton more finicky than the original, which. Ruins this to a point?? It's a shame because it's a fun dungeon otherwise, I love Tower of Druaga (the game, anime is dogshit apparently).

My main method for every boss for now was like, just zerg rush the fucker. And it worked. I was around Lv70 when I finished the Tower and I also went out of my way to get Terras, Diamonds x2, Cutie Mittens and max out HP and TP counters on everyone with Red Savories and Red Sages because I'm a virgin. So.

Also new weakness of mine: I cannot count to 10 like a normal person, I either go too fast or too slow. Please update the wiki on this. This was actually obliterating me while trying to get the Red Crystal Rod in Floor 48 and it triggered a mood swing because I couldn't sleep tonight (anxiety babey). Tried again after a nap #actualkindergartener

As for the rest of the game, it's Tales of Destiny. It's nothing special. I think I like it a bit more now, but I feel like it's still my least fave Tales game. Fritz's garbage FAQ on RPGClassics was like "I recommend Stahn, Philia, Rutee and Chelsea" but let the record show that I literally used only the guys (Stahn, Woodrow, Kongman, Johnny) for the entirety of Dycroft and came out just fine (gay rights)

Granted I'd need to go apeshit on Gels if I wasn't fully decked out due to not having Rutee's healing in battles but. The average GameFAQs user is really down bad with waifuism to the point of going full neckbeard, and I say this as someone who doesn't shame wanting to play with the cute girls, I'm gay and I love gross old men, it'd be hypocritical.

Also Kongman hits like a fucking truck, why would you ever use Chelsea beyond her being gender, Mary's a good all rounder and Johnny's skills are absurdly good, but I have no idea what's Chelsea's niche.

This game just happens.

I'm replaying Drama Mistery after ages, and it's been kinda nostalgic. It's a type of hack that really feels like a time capsule, something that would never be made nowadays (not a critique of the modern hacking trends, just pointing out how the culture and community is a factor that makes a huge difference on how things are created, more so than just the technology available), the amateur graphics have a charm to them, the double jump and health system make a lot of the jank that comes with custom stuff from that era (plus stuff like bullet generators) way more easy to deal with, since you don't die as easily (the game is super generous with HP). My only real gripe so far is the knockback, it's not really great in any game, here it isn't any different. Kood not having a double jump kinda confuses you after being used to Luigi in the first world, but later the differing playstyles help keeping a certain variety.

Also, I got my ass kicked by Jowey, the poison cow. :reimuko:
I didn't remember having any problems at the time, but I certainly used savestates back then (like a lot of people), so I'm extremely aware of how different my experience with bosses will get (custom bosses in SMW used to be pretty janky until a few years ago, at least most of the time), that's exciting in a way, because as I mentioned, there's a sort of nostalgic feeling with jank SMW bosses, even if I acknowledge they haven't aged gracefully, I can just appreciate the fact that they were ambitious and really important in paving the way for what we have now in hacks.

fart buttoning this post because it's a good ass take.

im not a huge fan of brutal mario anymore but i still have a certain fondness for it. messy smw hacks that don't try to be "vanilla world 2: mario saves the princess again" are always neat, though this isn't to say that vanilla smw hacks are bad by default.

btw i will say this: i'd rather deal with bad bosses in a smw context than in go go ackman on snes. at least in the former i can be sure it's just an amateur who's not used to boss design

Panzer Dragoon Saga - Replaying a bit, just out of Garil Desert and into the Caravan. Will keep going. Don't know what the D Units do but I've been collecting all of them.

Gotta remember to go back for the breakable stuff when my Laser Rank gets higher.

I kinda wanna add to this bc I was talking to a friend and. While I was autopiloting through neutral, the game has a good message.

Example: Asgore is the dumbest motherfucker and cannot get over Tori. He needs someone to look out for him.

And Tori is smothering but you have to keep into account she's still traumatized from grief, and divorce. She's just going through human bullshit and her bonding with Sans may help her with that, even if it's painful for Asgore.

There isn't really a truly evil Undertale character. The entire goddamned game is all a matter of miscommunication and bottled up bitterness, the main theme of the game is bonding for a reason, and the fact fans miss this entirely kind of gives me terribly bad vibes.

Even Asriel's death was a complete accident, people thought he killed Chara. Asriel was just like the equivalent of an 8 year old at the time to explain himself to people, he lived in fear of humans.

My friend also suggested (fanon here) that Chara may have been a child who was mistreated by humans, and thus the bitterness got to them to the point of taking it out on others, and True Pacifist is the player (Frisk) letting them go of all of that. And I can see that.

I like Deltarune better, but Undertale, despite being from 2015 and not jiving as much with, it's still a pretty soulful game.

Anyway Here Is My Essay On How Legend Of Mana And Undertale Are The Same Game. Chapter 1 (1/5867)
