So I am really terrible at PCB. And I JUST failed a 1cc with MarisaA because I was really stupid throughout most of stage 5/6... (7 lives going into stage 5 apparently wasn't enough <_<)

But I've worked out WHY I'm so bad - on my system at least the game seems to lag behind for me. What I mean is there's a delay between my input and when Marisa moves. Which is not good, since Marisa is really hard to use in PCB as it is lol. The delay feels like somewhere between 0.1 and 0.2 seconds, and it really throws me off.

Has anyone else encountered this? Any way of fixing it up? I really want to be able to play the game well, but I just cannot get used to the delay in the input that I'm feeling here...

In other news MarisaA is officially useless in that game lol. Weak bombs (compared to B at least), and the shot feels so bad compared to MarisaB too. Maybe I just like lasers too much, idk :S. I know Marisa is bad compared to the other characters on that game ANYHOW, but yeah... is it just me, or are all of the A characters on that game inferior to the B characters?

Lol wat.
Marisa is definately the best character of them all, you just need to be able to follow the bosses through their patterns, cause if you do, Marisa kills most of their spellcards in <20 seconds.

Technically, yes.
However, for beginners, it's way easier to play with ReimuA or SakuyaA than with their B equivalents, simply because both A types have homing bullets/knives.

SakuyaB for example can be used really well to collect Cherry Points and Powerups, but getting used to her "side-switching" knife attack can be pretty frustrating and difficult.

MarisaA is awesome. HUGE power which makes bomb power completely unneeded and amazing cherry increase rate, which (sort of kind of) compensates having only 2 bombs.
MarisaB as mediocre power, mediocre cherry increase rate and very strong bombs. But still only 2.

As I said, I probably just like lasers too much lol. But I genuinely don't find MarisaA as useful as B for some reason. I want to get this 1cc done though to give her a chance in Extra, since bombs aren't nearly as useful cause of the whole no damage during spell card stuff. I would've done it if I didn't specify having 3 lives to start with though... xP

So is it just me that feels like PCB lags behind in input?

Aghh! I just ALMOST defeated Byakuren, but I really screwed up Star Maelstrom, dying twice.
Then I died on Flying Fantastica when the purple amulets started coming. I got to her with 4 lives....

Maelstrom is a royal pain in the ass, it's so hard to work around... I've been getting better at it thankfully, but it was the last card in Normal for me to capture. Even behind Flying Fantastica... (although I've only captured that once, and I don't even know how!)

If you notice input lag, I recommend trying the VSync patch, which usually fix it - it worked for me.

On an unrelated note, you guys HAVE to watch this replay. It's my first try at Flandre in a few months, and I try her with ReimuA for the first time. The result is absolutely hilarious: I actually get to perfect Flandre, but literally EVERY spell (except Counter Clock) almost kills me, more often than not because they last much longer that usual and I'm used to them finishing quickly thanks to MarisaA's power.

After Cranberry Trap, I told myself I had to save the replay just to look at that almost-not-capture again, and then Laevateinn went sort of the same way, and then so did 4 of a kind, Kagome,Kagome and basically everything else. I was very sure that the run of "almost-not-capture"s would end with ATTWN or QED but... it didn't!

Holy crap that replay was awesome. Good god, at times you made it look like nothing could go wrong for you... and I guess it didn't outside of Royal Flare xD

Also jesus christ that patch sure as hell makes a difference. I noticed that all it really does technically is speed the game up (automatic text interludes are much faster I found, and ends of spells especially seemed to go a lot faster), but good god it's so much easier to play when it actually responds immediately to you. I just did a practice run on Stage 6 with MarisaA, where I originally failed a 1cc going in with 4 lives and 2 bombs... I used only I think 1 or 2 bombs throughout the entire run (pretty sure it was a deathbomb too, which were notoriously unreliable for me before), making passes I could never have hoped to during some of the spells before. I knew the input lag was affecting me in PCB, but I didn't think it was THAT bad... thanks Robin for effectively giving me a new game to play ^_^

Woah... I think I just beat Byakuren...
Yes indeed, I did! For some reason, the seven gods of luck were riding on my back this time.
I got to Murasa with 8 lives and a bomb, and caught all spell cards except Creeping thing which is still the worst. Then, Shou went really awesome, I almost captured Vajra, I captured Aura of Justice, and didn't bomb on any of her nonspells, and left with 6 lives (!). Byakuren went horrible, I actually ended with no lives left, but it was awesome! SanaeA btw..

Then, extra. The first part of the stage is really easy if you use the UFO's well.
Kogasa is pretty hard, as the first spellcard requires really small movement, which is pretty hard with Sanae. I hate her second card. The third card, I captured it on the third try. I think the trick is to go the way the lasers go too. I got to Nue exactly once, got to her second spellcard which is gonna be hard, I know it... Her first spellcard is easy, and her non-spells are still pretty easy.

Good job :D

Nue's non-spells aren't that bad, with the exception of the third and seventh ones. Well, the third more, simply because it's really fast.

Her second spell is pretty easy. Misdirect it - start on the side that the UFO's are rotating from (if they rotate clockwise then start on the right) and don't move until you have to. Then dive to the centre, as the bullets are aimed for where you were on the screen when they spawn. It helps if you can kill one of the UFO's that goes into the centre as it rotates down, but it's not essential. What is most important is that you only move when you have to - try to only make 2 significant movements per wave (the move at the start and the move to under Nue) and it''s really simple.

At least with Marisa, but I imagine the idea is sound for all characters.

Arghh, Ran!

I've gone and just used Reimu B, and although the homing is lost, the power gain is very much worth it. I can actually beat Red Oni, Blue Oni, Banquet of General Gods and Charming Siege from all sides now without bombing them away! I found out how Unilateral thingmajigger works: Wait out the first shot, then get close to her, then move away quickly when she fires the next round. Chen is easy as pie now that I have tried a danmakufu interpretation of Yukari, whose Ran is pretty much way harder. But then Koyuukki (whatever)-san's contract... I got there with 3 bomb, and it wasn't going too well that time, but I just forget to bomb at all... Which is annoying, because I almost got to the part where the cage is in the center. Just to be sure: It goes lower right, lower left, upper left, center, right?

Kokkuri-san's Contract's movement depends on your movement at the start, when it's not moving yet. (wow confusing sentence). It always goes to the lower-left first for me, because I usually go to the left at first.

Main hint for this attack is: dodge the rows of bullets one at a time. For the end, two things to know: you actually have a more space to move around than it might seem, and the shots are aimed, so moving as late as possible is recommended.

Good luck man. Ironically I find a lot of Ran's cards harder than Yukari's but that particular spell is one I've only captured once between them in about 20 attempts (it was Yukari's one I captured).

Speaking of that fight, I cannot seem to get the safe spot in Border of Life and Death to actually BE safe most of the time... I've noticed that the way Yukari moves seems to be somewhat dependant on the way you move, but I just can't seem to consistent get where I'm meant to sit lol. This annoys me a lot, because it really limits the number of shots I get at danmaku bounded field, and god knows I need loads more shots at that Dx

I've now managed somehow to 1cc MoF Normal as well, so I get to fight Suwako now too. That's gonna be fun - the stage itself is actually fairly easy, but Suwako herself took me out within about 4 spells lol. Oh well, first time of fighting her and whatnot. Plus, as good as she is at clearing the stages themselves, MarisaC is not the easiest of characters to be fighting bosses with... especially not ones that force me to move unfocused a fair bit <_<. I like the shot type though, it's really effective once you know where to place it.

So basically my targets now are to 1cc SA Normal (no idea when THAT'S gonna come, I can't seem to beat it whoever I try with at the moment...) and learn Suwako's fight so I can clear it. Good times, good times.

Hey, four spells is still pretty good. Most of the time when I try an extra stage for the first time I end up dead before reaching the midboss, let alone the boss.

As for me, Ran is still giving me trouble, for some reason. It seems that I will make mistakes every now and then that will slowly chip away at my bombs and lives until I get to Perfect Buddhist, where I manage to become so messed up by the alternating laser Buddhist swastikas (which I'm pretty sure is a phrase that I have never said before) that I end up running into them one way or another, even though I can tell exactly when they switch. Then I usually end up using at least one bomb on Unilateral Contract (although I think I captured it once out of my six or so tries), and then Kokkuri-san's Contract comes... Yeah, still haven't seen what's after that one.

In other news, I got yet another random burst of skill and 1cc'd IN Normal with everybody but Marisa/Alice. I actually had given in way back when and went through Easy mode to unlock the Extra Stage, but it REALLY didn't feel like I accomplished anything, considering I still had seven lives left on my first try, so it was nice to finally get that out of the way. That leaves SA as the only Normal 1cc left for me, too, and I have a feeling that that won't be happening anytime soon.

Edit: I BEAT RAN I BEAT RAN I BEAT RAN I BEAT RAN I BEAT RAN! YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

...But as usual, I can't ever have an impressive victory, so obviously the winning run had to include me dying at Wizard Fox Thoughts. Sheesh. I also managed to only get two captures in the entire stage... Really, I'm just glad that I managed to mess up early on in a way that gave me an extra life later on.

Anyway, now that the knowledge is useless, I think I finally understand why I kept having trouble at Charming Siege. Hooray!

I beat RANRANRUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!! (TOOOOOOO!!!)

It went pretty horrible, actually. I died at Chen, then I died at 12 general gods, then I bombed some of the other ones (Though I captured Charming Siege!) I bombed Kokkuri-san thrice, and Izuna-gan thrice too, and ended with no lives left... The only actual reason why I did it is because I got the 500 point life now (for the first time ever!)! Anyways, what are the requirements for the Phantasm stage?

Also, I'll be trying some more of Suwako next. I already got to her last attack once, so it shouldn't be too hard.

As far as I can tell, Phantasm is simply unlocked by beating Ran with the shot type you want to use for it. If that didn't work, maybe there's a minimum spell capture count too, like there was for Mokou's last word spell. I doubt it though, I only captured 5 cards in my clear of it and it went through fine... Mokou's last spell took 7.

Suwako's last spell looks like a mindbender, but it doesn't actually look as hard as most other last spells from other extra stages... but I haven't got there yet so I dunno.

Glad to hear some more people have cleared Ran though :D

I've been playing PCB on Hard a bit. Nearly 1cc'd too, I had starting resources (3 lives 2 bombs) at Yuyuko and died a couple of times without bombing <_<. Went fuck it and used a continue anyhow, and... I captured Resurrection Butterfly :S A total of 15 spells captured in the run. I died TWICE at Chen though... if that hadn't been the case it would've been a 1cc, first time -_-'. Guess I'm getting better!

(Except at using bombs... I think it was about 15 bombs used in the run too - WAY less that I could've used if I was completely economical...)

To unlock Phantasm you need to beat Ran with whatever character you want to play Phantasm as AND have captured at least 60 different spell cards in all the other modes combined.

Basically the best thing to do is a quick run of easy mode, this will increase your capture count by quite an amount I believe.

No, no need to beat Ran a second time! (but you will need to do it with the other characters though if you want to play Phantasm with them.) When both conditions are completed, Phantasm will unlock itself.

Ah, I unlocked it!
And I even got an amazing Ran (pun intended!) at the gitgo! The ironic thing is, Ran is also where it ended :P. So far, the ones that are giving me trouble are:

-Still the svastica one
-The bubble familiar with 360 degrees turning one
-Ran
-Double Black Death Butterfly (Using the full name!)

The nonspells almost aren't any harder, it seems, and I captured all of the other cards, expect Ran's second midbosscard and Yukari's harder version of Charming Siege. Let the training begin!

I actually unlocked Phantasm as soon as I beat Extra. I'm actually a bit surprised that there was another prerequisite, actually. As for Phantasm in itself... It's a bit hard for me to say how difficult it is. Midboss Ran's spellcards seemed difficult at first, mainly because bombs don't damage her, and I was sort of used to being able to simply plant a Duplex Barrier right on top of Chen during the spinning spellcard, but just now I decided to try to be patient and captured both of her spells. Then I got to Yukari, forgot to bomb at all three lives in a row, and still made it halfway through the fight. Thing is, this seems to happen somewhat often. It seems like a lot of Yukari's attacks don't look like they would be harder than their Ran versions, but end up catching me off guard somehow and killing me before I can deathbomb since I didn't expect to die (a good example would be the quickly appearing lasers in her version of Charming Siege.)

So... I dunno, the stage is weird. Speaking of which, I think I've died more at the intro than anywhere else in the stage, and almost "captured" the appearing bullets at the end on my first try. I actually would have, but I didn't expect the final burst to happen and stood in place instead of moving...

Yukari's one is easier, but I get unlucky a lot during it... in my best run so far, I got killed by a random bubble because the hitbox was apparently larger than every other bubble I dodged in that run <_<

In other news, I 1cc'd SA Normal at last! Ended up using ReimuA anyhow, as much as I hate Reimu, and I ended with 2 lives left. It was really hard trying to get used to Reimu's slower movement speed... and I still maintain that I hate her, but unfortunately for me she has the shot type that I typically love Marisa for, so I didn't have all that much choice!

Oh well, capturing Mega Flare and Heaven and Hell Meltdown made up for it.

And then unlike MoF Extra, the SA extra stage just utterly destroys me... I don't like how difficult it is to get power during the stage, and I DEFINITELY don't like how you don't actually get a full life out of Sanae. I mean EVERY other Extra stage gives a life after the mid-boss, why does this one have to be so different? :(

(And by the way how the hell do you avoid the fairy barrage right after that? It just looks flat-out impossible...)
