あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
Source page
So yeah, this seems to be going under the radar a little bit, but it is shaping up to be a fantastic game from what I've seen and played. I cannot understand any of what's going on because I have no knowledge of Japanese at all sadly (I don't even know what to call this game!), but from I've gathered Marisa, Alice, Patchouli and Nitori are going on some sort of adventure. There are books (as always) in the stages, so I'm guessing something went wrong at the library again.
(All of the following is what I have gathered by playing the trial, and may not be 100% accurate in the final version)
This plays somewhat like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but without the pushing people out of the way. Up to 4 players can control one of the girls in a platforming scenario. The usual Desunoya puzzle elements (timed switched, coloured blocks, ice and trick blocks) are still present, but in the first world have been downplayed quite severely. Each character has their own movement speed and floatiness, which determines how useful their mid-air hop is. All characters can also dash in downward directions (diagonals included), though this cannot be done alongside the air hop. Characters start each stage with 2 health (indicated by stars at the bottom of the screen); collecting P items will increase your health by one, up to a maximum of 3. When you have full health you gain access to the character's special ability, fuelled by the power meter below the health stars. These cannot be used with other air actions though, but CAN be used on the ground. Character traits are as follows:
Marisa: Sporting blue for some reason (what's up with all the blue Marisa resurgence? Not that she looks bad in blue, but...), Marisa is the fastest and heaviest character in the game. Her air hop doesn't ever give her any height, so it's barely useful even as a slight fall buffer. Her ability is to dash horizontally with her broom, like she did in Trap Tower. This can only be used once before the bar has to recharge though, and it has a long cooldown time. Overall she's pretty standard.
Alice: Alice is the second-fastest character, tied with Nitori. She is ligher than Marisa, but she still only gains a tiny bit of height from her air hop. It's more useful when you are falling however, as you gain a bit more height back. Her special is a doll shield, which guards ONLY against projectiles. It drains very little energy and recharges almost instantly, but prevents Alice from moving during use. Overall she's a more specialised character, but has definite uses in multiplayer.
Patchouli: As expected, Patchouli is the slowest and lightest character. She is the only character who gains some height with her air hop, making her the most stable character to platform with. Her special shoots a fireball straight forward, ala Summer Red in Hisouten. The fireball itself is fairly large and will destroy enemies on contact, but travels in a straight line across the screen, making it difficult to hit moving targets. If used in the air, Patchy will stay still until the animation ends. You can fire up to 3 fireballs before recharging. By pressing Up + Special, you can instead shoot an Autumn Blade vertically, with the same properties as Summer Red. Overall the most generally useful character for single player, but she may lag behind in fast multiplayer games.
Nitori: She ties in speed with Alice and is between Alice and Marisa in weight. Her special is her Extending Arm, which like the Nitroid version shoots out horizontally and collects items/destroys enemies. Like Patchy's attack it cancels all mid-air movement whilst in use. You can use it twice without recharging. It's pretty useful, but it gets very easily stopped by small items and has limited range. I don't believe Nitori can latch onto blocks with it like she could in Nitroid, but I may be mistaken in the full release. Overall she's kinda like Youmu in the main series - pretty awesome but harder to use than most of the others.
Point items are plentiful in this game, acting as coins do in Mario. Large items are worth 10 points, and 100 give a life. Each player has their own life pool, and dying will cause them to be sent back to one of the other active players on-screen like the bubble in NSMB Wii. There seem to be a lot of lives in the early-game though, so it isn't a huge deal. You get some lives for completing stages or the first time anyhow.
Finally, from what I've been told this game will support netplay! Hopefully it won't be too laggy, and some good quality games can be enjoyed. Apparently this will be released at Reitaisai 10, which is very soon! I'm definitely looking forward to this ^_^

I saw this on youtube 1 or 2 days ago. Looks very Funny when you play this with 4 People.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
I helped on this game. (check the staff page if you don't believe me)
FWIW the full version has a few changes, specifically you only need 2 health to do specials, not 3.
Some other notes: 1ups are given like candy and are mostly balanced for having a lot of players around being completely chaotic and possibly killing each other. Alice is really good for stages later on, as the early world doesn't really have a lot of projectiles but it ramps up. Patchouli's horizontal speed can be increased by divekicking; I'm not even joking, try it and hold the direction. Nitori can't latch onto anything, just grab items. I have a hard time figuring out her role except as a more nimble attacker than Patchouli.
This is one of desuno's best games in awhile, highly recommended. Edit: Actually, really, everything he's put out in the past couple years has been a great time. I mean it. I am hard to please.
I'll be helping on the netplay and, uh, anyone who knows me knows that netplay is my specialty so I'll at least try to make sure it's decent. >2 players will always lag like crazy in American networks though, I can't do anything about that. MariAli2's netplay was very very playable even though hardly anyone had the netplay version.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
I noticed in the end that Patch's speed could be mitigated by the dash thing, I just wasn't aware of how it would play out since I haven't had a chance to do multiplayer at all. I also figured Alice would be much more useful later on; she just needs the right situation to work in.
Great to see someone who has helped with the game post here though ^_^. I'm really looking forward to picking this up, though I'm really not sure on how I'm gonna do that yet... I'll keep my eyes open though! One thing I really need to get better at is finding channels within which to buy games like this.
So... question: Was this game released at Reitaisai 10 after all, or was I told wrong about that?

It was released at Reitaisai, yeah.
He really came down to the wire on this one so there's no other store purchases available yet, but they'll be coming.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
Oh yeah. The story. Game's name is Amapani (AliceMArisaPAtchouliNItori).
Three of them had their magic items stolen(Marisa's Hakkero, Alice's Gargant Doll, Patchouli's Philosopher's Stone), they're going out to take their stuff back, Nitori's tagging along for the ride.
Nazrin doesn't have it but offers to help them search for stuff if they test her new pendulum out.

If the Name´s really goin' for the Characters name, then must actually for PA staying this one パmauve wrote:Oh yeah. The story. Game's name is Amapani (AliceMArisaPAtchouliNItori).

How does one-player compared to multiple at once?
And I have a feeling that if anyone makes a video series for this game, it would be better as multiplayer gathering (possibly a stream or something) than a regular solo let's play.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
using hiragana is more childish and flowing when it's meant to be the name of the game as well, so it's likely deliberate - it still references Patchi's name, just less directly.Picochilla wrote:If the Name´s really goin' for the Characters name, then must actually for PA staying this one パmauve wrote:Oh yeah. Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
I do aim to do an LP stream series out of this, and it will be multiplayer... I'm just hoping the netplay will hold up well enough. Like knowing what was said before about more than 2 person play means it MAY not work as well as one would like, but I'm mostly hoping it's playable enough. It doesn't have to be perfect, just so long as it's not TOO insanely laggy/input dropping it will be a very fun time!

Really depends how far apart everyone is. Don't be expecting cross-country to be nice.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
Netplay across countries never sounds like a good idea. Other than that, this game seems interesting, it's just I'm not great with Desunoya games. I still have a ways to go with MariAri2.
Also, I recognize your name, mauve. Didn't you work on the Hellsinker English patch in some way?

Because Touhou OCs can in fact exist, sounds fake I know.
I can't change my username but I go by Vali/Claire now (aka call me Vali or Claire at your leisure ^^).
I never update this currently playing section anymore, it's probably an RPG or something.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
I've done the modding for all the Touhou fighters (except Hopeless, I will not be doing it), and all of gs.o's game translation releases other than the main Touhou shmups. Also I did MariAli2 and helped on Nitroid.Validon98 wrote:Netplay across countries never sounds like a good idea. Hellsinker is one of those, yes. That was one of the most difficult jobs I picked up, but also the most rewarding by far. (Also, least popular by far.)

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
Can someone explain netplay? Sorry if this is a noobish question but I cannot read anything in this game.
Nevermind I figured it out but it keeps freezing. Is it because of a bad internet connection?

In case you don't know, there's a sequel that was released a couple of days ago.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
From what I saw, each character has a new ability. I couldn't infer much else from it.
Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
hello i tested this new game thing!
it's basically amapani romhack edition. all new levels, all of which are harder than the original game's; i'd say it took me twice as long to 'normal clear' urapani as it did amapani. every character gets a new power, though marisa broom got a nerf because too powerful. multiplayer dramatically improved, added a battle mode for chaos.
it's very much an upgrade to the first game and is pretty cleverly made.

Didn't Patchouli already have two attacks?
Why is it called urapani?

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
Yeah, sorry, Patchouli doesn't have anything new this time. Upwards wheel is still there.
'ura' means reverse, and is short hand for 'uramen' or reverse side stages. Think like lightworld/darkworld type thing. The story is Nitori reversed time and now she's the only one that knows what's going on and the entire thing plays out differently.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
Ooh, sweet. The one thing that seemed "off" to me about Amapani was that only two, maybe three stages actually seemed as tough as I would expect from a Desunoya game. That didn't mean it was bad, of course, but... Well, by now a "Desunoya game" kind of comes with an expectation of extreme difficulty near the endgame and postgame, haha~
So if Urapani is a traditional-difficulty Amapani, I can't wait to get my hands on this.

Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
something to remember is that amapani was probably his first purely action-focused game, so he didn't want to overdo it. up until then his games (including tobari) were largely more of a puzzle and navigational focus.
he and his crew much more familiar with it now, so the levels are upgraded accordingly.
of course, his next game is going to be a fire emblem-style srpg, soooo yeah.

also: For anyone who had Amapani, he released a new patch today that put the network improvements in and, more importantly, backported all the new character moves/actions!
Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
This looks amazing, just saying. Would definitely play online with just about anyone.
Re: あまぱに!- A new Desunoya game I know nothing about
Ahhh I've been looking for a way to get hold of Urapani since I heard of its release but I can't find it >_<. Since I did a lot of speedrunning for the original I was looking forward to getting this, but I just haven't been able to get a hold of it. Much sadfacing has been had >_<
It looks pretty great though. If I ever get hold of it I'll definitely play it through.
