Re: Celeste - K2

8C is super tough as well, but

I love how most of the gimmicks from the earlier levels are brought back in the final room. It really makes the last gauntlet of the game feel climactic.

Re: What games are you playing?

I'm also on the La-Mulana 2 train, having played 1 almost a decade ago. It's quite the step up, but still retains some of that bullshit "charm" that the first game had - namely, the instant death traps everywhere . Spoiler of where I am so far: Just got the Egg of Creation in the Takamagah...

Re: Celeste - Dhaulagiri I

3A was one of my favorite chapters, personally. Hated 3C though, so I'm curious to see how raocow handles that last room.

Re: Celeste - Broad Peak (Gasherbrum was greedy)

Yeah, 6B was the first stage that I found really nasty. I stayed under 250ish deaths for most of the B-sides but I think I got about 550 on 6B.

The remix is awesome though.

Re: here he is, chocolate level design contest.com 2018 - pepsi cans

That second level felt like it was made by someone from the JUMP team (actually got a lolyoshi vibe from it for whatever reason). Really creative stuff - I’ll be curious to see the author and score once they’re posted.

Re: Celeste - Masherbrum

I love it when games utilize tracks that start off with only one channel, and then gradually build up as the area goes on. In the case of chapter 3, it really brings about a great atmosphere.

Re: Chocolate Level Design Contest 2018 - apples

What was the song that used the KDL3 sound font? It wasn't any KDL3 song that I remember. It’s actually a KDL3 remix of a RtDL track. Really strange and disjointed level today, but other than being all over the place, it wasn’t nearly as offensive as other 2nd last place entries I’ve seen in previo...

Re: Chocolate Level Design Contest 2018 - apples

the reason I'm not jumping into doing vldcx is I heard there are long streches of levels that are just not interesting? if there is enough actual interest I could make room for it in *the list* There were something like 180 entries, so yes, there's a huge swath of mediocrity in the middle. That's k...

Last I recall, there were talks of doing a top 60 collab ROM, but I haven’t really followed SMWC in almost a year now so I don’t know if it ever took off/is still happening.

Re: Super Mario Doomsday - Global Solar EMP Event

I'd be really curious to hear dev commentary on some of these levels. Like, the level design has been just fine so far - mostly - but there are so many glaringly obvious and easy-to-fix issues that lead me to question whether or not this was tested at all (the P-Switch spawning in the wall is a huge...

Re: Super Mario Doomsday - Y2K Virus

Speaking of the text boxes, it’s also frustrating that the new lines keep starting in the middle of revealing a word rather than putting the whole word on a new line from the get-go. Otherwise, there’s not too much to say yet - more interested in seeing how the levels are than the story, so tomorrow...

Music for a Genesis-styled platformer I've been working on

Back when I still hacked SMW, I spent a lot of time composing tracks for my own stuff + other projects (A2MT, contests on SMWC, etc). It's about the only thing I've been fairly consistent with over time, up until I took a break for whatever reason about a year ago. I've gotten back into it recently,...

Re: Hyper VI - Haimari Presents: The Romhack Equivalent Of A Hamster Wheel

The first quarter of that level was actually pretty neat, barring a couple of shitty jumps. Seems like Haimari used the gimmick fairly well. The second quarter was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in SMW. The glitched Koopa/Goomba at the end is such a slap in the face (though I guess the major...

Re: Hyper VI - Running Out Of Thumbs-Ups To Give

I couldn’t even imagine doing that all in one go. What’s even more frustrating from a design standpoint is that each of those sections likely took 5-10 minutes max to create. It’s not like there was any level of intricate thought put into them, but rather it’s “hey, here’s a long coiled line guide” ...

It’s all fun and games until you get door 6 of Bowser’s Castle with the water removed and turbo-speed maces. That’s a bit of a beast to get through.

Re: What games are you playing?

Blossom Tales gives you an item that lets you walk faster, so that fixed my one gripe. Problem is that I think there are only four dungeons. It's okay, but again, it's got stiff competition on a system that already has quite a few Zelda-like games on it already. In its own bubble, the game is all r...

Re: request grab-bag

apparently it was made using stuff from smwc's most recent c3, so it's about as modern as you can get.

(played some of it - it's really fun, and also quite challenging. worth adding to the lp list imo.)

I'm more bothered by the sheer number of extra notes in that Bayou Boogie port than the level itself. Yikes.

Re: What games are you playing?

Going through Okami HD, and it's as great as I remember the original being. My only complaint is the difficulty (and I remember having this issue when I played it the first time), but it's way too easy. I kind of wish there was a difficulty setting, because outside of like two bosses, you can pretty...

Re: Aquaria: The Thread™

I played this game in 2009 or so and I loved it at the time, but it's definitely much slower paced than most Metroidvanias. It's really relaxing, at least. IIRC, the guy who worked on this (Alec Holowka) is also responsible for Night in the Woods, which is a fantastic game everyone should check out,...
