Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - 1Fb0o
I think a lot of the creativity in superwario's entry shines from the dragon coin setups (which utilize the wrapping gimmick a lot better imo)
Blue Leaf's entry is just super well designed. "Solid", I would say, except it's not rock solid.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Swiss World
That's a good criticism. I still struggle with coming up with a theme and building around it; usually I have lots of scattered, cool ideas (sometimes very relevant to the overall gimmick, sometimes tangentially related, and sometimes completely off-topic) that I play around with for a bit, and then ...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Archival Purposes
There is no 19th level. There is no Ms. Zarves. Great reference. I feel quite bad for making a level that would make a judge quit. I doubt I should have changed much of the design, though; just the aesthetics, which I realize are very lacking. I'm really glad raocow got ambushed by the blue falling...

Re: Nachos and Fried Oreos - 6 - Nachos and Fried Oreos
I really loved watching this a ton. I'd also say this was one of my favorite hacks of all time. The style of design appeals to me in a different way pure creativity does.
I'm also really glad expert mode seemed to be just the right amount of tension and difficulty for raocow.

Re: slurdgery - 2 - the plot is you play as mario and he goes through some levels
I'm pretty sure sixcorby borrowed those thwomp graphics from super maks 64.
I love all these levels, by the way.

The half-blocks in the final room... so much effort was put into making that happen. I hope it has some applications.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Four
I'm quite astonished at my placement. I made the level fairly quickly-- I definitely made use of the 1 day deadline extension. I'm really happy with the idea of the level; I had some sadistic ideas for setups that might be too mean (like an overly long midway that players rush toward, but ends up be...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Four
I never noticed the shadow effect in the walls. That's neat. I really liked how the crazy eater blocks were used (in my vldc9 entry, it was downright unfair, but here, everything was introduced smoothly and in a way the player could react to.)

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Seven Six
Dan Drigues' level is the type of platforming I'd like to see more often. Going through the level is very satisfying-- the sproings were used masterfully. I replayed Christian07's level since he mentioned some bonus rooms, and I went into an endless bonus game after completing the sinking net room (...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Eleven Ten
That was super interesting to read about, ECS! I learned some new things, especially about the key vending machine. I also loved the levels today. I personally got somewhat frustrated by the second half of super maks' level (maybe it could use a 1-up checkpoint). I think pyro's level has super high ...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Eleven Ten
It's amazing how many times level designers "steal" ideas from others, but then improve upon it. Usually I steal ideas, but I am flattered to have my ideas stolen from. I feel both levels today took a slice of inspiration from my vldcx level, swissotel: Taking up sprite slots (raocow is ri...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Final Hour
The 2 levels today had some of the best aesthetics I've ever seen. I personally enjoyed the design of the first level a lot more; the second level did not feel like it was giving me a challenge. (or maybe I was too sleepy while playing it)

I was very impressed with the autoscroll room of Have Sweet Dreams. I thought the beginning was quite slow though, and had some blind drops.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- tim horton's betrayal
I'm genuinely impressed with both levels today, albeit in very different ways. I like the flow and challenge of the first level. The second is just a neat idea, although perhaps could be more creative in its execution. Well done to both of you guys!

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Crank it up
I think Petroleum Pipeland is a "your mileage may vary a lot" level. Having played so many similar kaizo-type levels in ROM hack races, I basically knew what to expect for each obstacle. Based on raocow's experience, I think he could clear it quickly. "Dude, Jill", though. That o...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- A one and another
I played a beta version of this level as testing. I enjoyed the first two sections very much, but then got extremely frustrated with the 3rd section. I couldn't figure out how to get baby yoshi to eat everything required, and I died way too often before that to get many chances. Eventually I gave up...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Second half of a convenience store
Honestly, the idea behind jumping off fish/spike balls in tides that change level is quite good. There were some interesting things done. Clearly, you've got creativity, but it just needs to be executed in a more playable state.

What was the music in you were holding an umbrella? I swear I've heard that song before but can't place it. Equinox maybe? Funny enough, our team had lots of trouble choosing a piece of music for umbrella. One proposed piece was an edit of Equinox - Tori, except lolyoshi did something with the inst...

I love solving these types of puzzles-- the satisfaction from the "aha!"s are so worth it, especially when you understand why certain setups are the way they are.
Also, mario levels on notebook paper is essentially all I did in school until 5th grade, lol

Re: JUMP arg(1+(√(-1)))*(2/π) - Half a jump is still a jump
gbreeze got the idea; then we combined our creative efforts (and scrapped a lot of rooms) to make that giant puzzle level.
Here's one of the scrapped puzzles, made by gbreeze, that used the item swap glitch. Don't ask me how it works!
