Re: Mother 3 - A game about life on the farm
http://i.imgur.com/rtbar.png Let's head to the East, like we said we would. (Notice the difference in color? Hell of a lot better) http://i.imgur.com/1nbXW.png When we get there, we see the Dragos that Sualc was talking about. Turns out they're actual ****ing dinosaurs. They're friendly though, so ...

NOTE: The images are initially dark because I'm dumb and didn't put the emulator on Truecolor. This is fixed next update! Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I tend to enjoy the Mario hack more, but that's mostly because they're consistent. The B side can either be hells of a lot better, (An Untitled Story) or kind of a bore. (MariAri, Nitroid) Of course, this is all subjective, but I find the Mario hacks are funner to watch just to see what wacky thing ...

Mother 3 - A game about life on the farm
http://i.imgur.com/1I0IX.png Mother 3? What the dick is that? Mother 3, released in 2006, is the sequel to Mother 2, which all you in the Western World might know as Earthbound. Unfortunately, Mother 3 was never officially translated and released in the West, due both to Earthbound's relatively poo...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Over, Under, Repeat is just another example of the game forcing guesswork and luck. The best way to use podoboos are to set up a system where the player would know where they are. Maybe a coin, maybe a grate in the floor, something. As long as it's consistent and the player knows what to expect when...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
There's an easier cape to get near the beginning of the game, in a level called... Vertical Climb? Ascension? Something like that, it's the third level. It has a cape in a ? box near the beginning if you have the yellow switch pressed, which raocow does.AUS wrote:But there's a cape there!

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I think it's more that people are interpreting using a meme as a substitute for humor. To an extent, it is. Memes that are played out are only funny to people who think they're in some elite club who "get the joke." The use of LAZORS and the appropriately black face shooting and/or chargin...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Orby Shenanigans reminded me a lot of the kind of gimmick that the Wario Land games would have, specifically Wario Land 4. It was a pretty good level and didn't overstay it's welcome, which is very good for this game! Still Underground was just that, another underground level. And strangely enough, ...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Also game overs remove the midpoint, so there's that. Well, it's not like it's hard to go farm lives. It's one of the reasons why I play by plonking a savestate at the beginning of every level. I enjoy the philosophy that games like Super Meat Boy take, that when you die, the game wastes zero time ...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Yeah, spaces between levels, going to the map screen and such, seems like a nice (sometimes much needed) break. Having a level like Kinda Sorta Think in which there is no break shatters the natural stride the player takes, jettisoning them into a marathon that they definitely didn't sign up for. Eve...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I'm surprised that, while pointing out things you liked, you specifically mention Kinda Sorta Think, which is probably the worst level in the game for a number of reasons. The puzzle is okay, in fact, it's very clever, making you switch between your flower and cape at the end is something you don't ...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Man I almost forgot about the whole process you need to go through to get a Yoshi. It doesn't get any easier either, unless I've missed something, and I've hit every exit up to around the beginning of World 8 so far. It really is stupid to have to require a Yoshi, then to have the player go to oddly...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
I don't think it's so much his "style" as much as it is "things that could be easily ironed out". Cypher could easily release a Mario Gives Up v1.1 with a few fixes and tweaks, (Nix the entire second half of Kinda Sorta Think for one) and it'd probably be a great game. This entir...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Especially because the secret exit is literally required to beat the game. You need that password. Based on the fact that it seems to be using dice, I'm pretty sure you could skip one of the Land of the Dead levels and just brute force it. Only six combinations. Ah, but the catch is At the last roo...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Well there's obviously a bit of hyperbole going on, but it was overall a poor level. Good concept, generally good level layout, but hiding the midpoint away in a place that forces you to re-do the level in its entirety is one of the worst design choices you can make. Edit: Especially because the sec...

Re: Mario Gives Up 2: Let's resuscitate the Princess
Again, the game is plagued with poor design decisions. I enjoyed the ponies level because I'm one of those guys. Though I suppose I should clarify that I liked the concept. It reminded me of the Boo races in the GBC port of Mario 1, and it was pretty cool. What wasn't cool was the fact that the midp...
