Re: SMBX vs Lunar Magic: Which is better?

As someone who (as a non SMBX user) has been lurking on the SMBX forums from time to time, please show me: 1. Some sort of custom boss which is genuinely impressive in terms of attack pattern, and can match something in a high end SMW ASM hack. 2. At least one level with graphics of higher quality t...

Re: SMBX vs Lunar Magic: Which is better?

Lunar Magic. Without a doubt. It allows for more creativity simply by letting you modify the game source code in a way that Super Mario Bros X can never match. For example, look at just about any complicated SMW hack with a ton of ASM and custom programming (Brutal Mario, Mario LD, SMWCP 1/2, any AS...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: rip in piss

Meh, it was a better LP than Eight Powers, I'll give it that. Or likely Randorland 3. Or that weird Luigi game some French guy made a long time ago. But a bit of a disappointing LP in general, I must admit. Kind of expected more interesting levels given all the attention A2MT got when it was still i...

Re: request grab-bag

my main problem is that there are a lot of differences between tsrp and tsrpr, but I don't know if there are a lot of meaningful differences between tsrp2 and tsrp2r, since the latter was already pretty feature-complete and overall 'good'... Based on my playthroughs of both the original TSRP2 and t...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: it's almost over don't worry

Well, that level was sure something. But yeah, my opinion on it is that the level kind of feels like a wasted opportunity. I mean, the graphics and music are incredible and the ideas used in the level design are also really well done, but it just falls down because of a difficulty level somewhat set...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: it's almost over don't worry

That last level could have made a pretty nice special world all by itself, had it been split into multiple levels and massively toned down in difficulty.

Unfortunately, as per the standards of the time, everything ended up in one really long stage instead.

Re: A Second Mario Thing: it's almost over don't worry

Although in general, the concept of 'vanilla' has always struck me as a cop out. Nintendo (and professional game devs) never make vanilla games. They never reuse the graphics and concepts for two or more games in a row, unless they're the likes of EA pumping out yearly sports games. Super Mario Bro...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: it's almost over don't worry

Except whenever someone's first time levels get into VIP (hence a quality failure), they usually get stuck at the start somewhere. Which means playing through levels by amateurs before those by skilled level designers, at least most of the time. Also, while a good level doesn't have to be chocolate*...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: it's almost over don't worry

Nitroid is a lot of things, but Nitroid is not boring. EDIT : Or perhaps you mean boring to watch raocow play for Dr. Shemp? Because that's something only Doctor Sh. can answer. By strict definitions of the word boring, Nitroid is not. I'm sure he was talking about the implementation of Nitroid gim...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: it's almost over don't worry

Length/Pacing reason. Allows the designer to have a checkpoint before/after a tough section so they're stuck over an over again. Allows the designer to have a checkpoint on a completely different path without trying to make it a marathon run. Allows the deisgner to have a checkpoint before a boss, ...

I'm not sure if I posted here already, but I love the soundtracks to Mario & Luigi Dream Team and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. Just in general: WprkcmGPcNM LCC_wq4StUY Jmy506jvI3k H2gnscqwcro 1cG_J9rcefw 4_kLUjG1Bjk It makes it depressing when I can't find a good quality version of one of the song...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: it's almost over don't worry

I still don't get why most collabs tend to make the last level a collab level with one room per contributor. Oh sure, I can understand branching paths, but... can't just one person make a final level? Is there some unwritten rule that any long level in a collab must be split up so multiple people ca...

Re: request grab-bag

Here's an interesting game raocow could try: http://forums.mfgg.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16343 It's called Super Mario Country, and despite the name, is a pretty neat Super Mario Land 2 style Mario fan game. It's got lots of retro style graphics that could come straight out of the original game (...

Re: [A2MT SPOILERS] A2MT final boss "discussion" thread

Okay I should clarify one thing: the boss is still going to be toho even if it's offensive. Mario does not have physics. You'd be shooting bullets just like a toho game, moving left, right, up, and down. I thought that would've been obvious but whatever. That's fine, because it still makes the batt...

Re: [A2MT SPOILERS] A2MT final boss "discussion" thread

I prefer an offensive fight because on a practical level, fighting is more fun than dodging. Especially in Super Mario World where Mario's defences are crap and where the physics mostly work better for offensive, fairly short boss battles than the more drawn out ones in your average shoot em up. And...

Re: A Second Mario Thing: better than your face

re: Item babysitting no longer being a thing Are those dumb nonsensical homing bullets also no longer a thing? Because they're dumb and make no sense and really should quit being a thing. Re: A Second Mario Thing: not as good as smwcp2

Double post because that one was long and I think this sums it up. What makes me happiest is when a romhack makes me forget it's a romhack, simply by great polish and proper solid level design. See, this is where I disagree. My favorite levels tend to be the exact opposite of that and are usually e...

Re: [A2MT SPOILERS] A2MT final boss "discussion" thread

So, given that there's no A2MT (or A3MT for that matter), what's this for again?

Just some sort of personal project you'll be releasing in IPS form for the chronically bored on these forums? Something you plan to show off at C3 this year? Something else?

Re: A Second Mario Thing: chock full of ok levels

I don't usually post in this topic, but i think the best solution to this Thwomp confusion would simply be to make EVERY Thwomp based enemy in the level react to the switches. I think that's how a few certain older Mario hacks did it, and it really minimised confusion by simply making it so you have...

It's been done before. Well, people on Mario Fan Games Galaxy have tried it, and I'm pretty sure some Paper Mario fan games exist over there. You're also not likely to be sued. Seriously. Otherwise Mario Fan Games Galaxy, Fusion Fangaming/Gameworks or SMW Central would be toast by now. You just nee...

Re: request grab-bag

My question about A2MT is how you'd structure the overworld for an unfinished game. You gonna make a big flat level list lie in those early VIP 5 and 6 demos? Or you going to use the final overworld, except with the paths all set to open and all level tiles skippable? Sounds interesting as a project...
