Re: Level testing and discussion
https://bin.smwcentral.net/u/17388/gbreeze_a3mt.zip Sorry if this is the wrong place to submit my levels, but I wasn't sure where to do it. Patch is also included in case anyone wants to test. Re: YUMP2 - Allegretto
a large majority of the hacks speedran today are kaizo (probably over 90%, you can check speedrun.com for yourself). this is because part of the "appeal" of kaizo is replay-ability. many streamers and other kaizo players like kaizo because it sort of builds up muscle memory as you do the t...

All authorities agree that the first hole on every links should be moderately easy, in order to give the nervous player a temporary and fictitious confidence.

Re: YUMP2 - Stage Theme 1
I made an extremely lazy TAS to see how fast one could get 300 GP. Didn't spend much time routing and it's obviously unoptimized, so there is probably a faster route, but it's a start at least.

Re: YUMP2 - The Last Judgement
Peter Popoff (or the secret author behind the name) is spectacularly versatile at level design. This author has made very ASM-focused levels and great vanilla levels, is able to make both super modern, fast paced kaizo levels and classic, old school japanese levels to a T, and of course makes some o...

Re: YUMP2 - 30 - Clocktowers Beneath the Sea
I was curious so I actually counted. In just 2020, there were 81 kaizo hacks and 76 non-kaizo hacks submitted to smwc. Which is interesting. I think kaizo and non-kaizo are about even in popularity if you're looking at just a hacking perspective. Of course, it depends on the community. On twitch, 90...

Re: YUMP2 - 26 - Suicide Is Painless
I can't put my finger on why, but cave dnager feels like it could fit in the original kaizo trilogy really well (especially kaizo mario world 2). Not sure if it's the aesthetics (pink lava, entirely vanilla) or the gameplay (slow paced and meandering but creative tricks, use of gotcha traps). The B ...

Re: YUMP2 - 25 - Phantom Train
For those curious, the way that Gorgonrot's asm works is that the level instantly makes the coin sprite spawn cement and then deletes the coin. That's why you couldn't burn the message box, yoshi, or the bowser statue. And yes, strangely enough, burning a red flying coin produces a coin.

Re: YUMP2 - 7 - Nonary Game
The origin of the Sounds for the Supermarket track 1 is apparently a bit of a mystery. The original song is actually called "Mr. Lucky" by Karl Jenkins and Take Six, album called SUNNY JIM, released by De Wolfe Music in 1980 (not 1975). https://www.dewolfemusic.com/search.php?code=Aklgqg&a...

Re: COMING UP NEXT
Sorry, I should have clarified that I wasn't responsing to you directly! Just posting on the topic in general, that was my bad. And yeah, just to piggyback off the convo above, we really wanted to stress what this hack was like for everyone, but also to raocow as well. It looks like an lp is inevit...

Re: COMING UP NEXT
Ultimately, raocow can choose what he wants to play. We marked yump 2 as kaizo:light and this wasn't a decision taken lightly. We felt the hack was substantially hard and brutal enough to elicit a kaizo:light ranking. This is going to obviously decrease the number of people that play it, and that's ...

Re: COMING UP NEXT
So YUMP 2 was made for an audience of the level makers, but was still distributed openly to the public. But from what I can tell, nothing was explicitly stated on the page advertising the hack or anything similar to suggest this; they'd just see it as "a hack by the team that made X, Y, and Z....

Re: COMING UP NEXT
Hopefully we don't get any more level names like that one. That level's name was truly the icing on the cake for how awful it is. There is nothing in the hack remotely related to that level, so no worries. Also, the author of that level himself is gay, so it's unlikely it was meant to be an insult....

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - 1he First place entry...well d0ne to all.
So wait, how much did they use outside of Lunar Magic? Earlier in the LP I was trying to make my own “vanilla” smw level as a learning exercise and to better understand and appreciate what goes into these things — I used yy-chr for a few extra background/scenery tiles, but otherwise was putting thi...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - grav1tyF0
He didn't do anything wrong, the first half is quite poorly designed, especially by my standards today. There's a lot of stuff in this level that I would have done differently now, looking back on this 3 year old level I feel somewhat embarrassed about some things. I would probably have redone the e...

Re: VIP6 - Nara
There's a few things that made the vips special when they came out. The first is the clever design and use of unusual tricks and gimmicks. The second would be that every level felt unique (thanks cozyduck for pointing this out to me). At the time of their release, a lot of hacks had levels that were...

Re: VIP6 - Gifu
I'm vibing with Rift Valley Athletic for some reason, even though it's pretty standard and simple. The design is just very solid. The look is largely vanilla but the coffee lava combined with the mushroom tileset just looks super nice to me for some reason.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - OK still looking at 100th! To level or not to level...
On smwc, the categories for difficulty are broken down like so: -Kaizo:light - possible without tools (and intended to be rta). -Kaizo:hard - either impossible without tools or the author so clearly intended tool-use that not using them is miserable. -Pit: abuses constant frame perfect tricks and us...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - We've passed 100th! Prelude to 'the!
It's been suggested by several people that a creativity contest would be a nice idea to have. The contest would focus on what sort of creative ideas you can create with LM, whether that be compelling and interesting stories, creative atmosphere and aesthetics, or even using ASM to come up with a uni...
