Re: YUMP2 - 7 - Nonary Game

The origin of the Sounds for the Supermarket track 1 is apparently a bit of a mystery. The original song is actually called "Mr. Lucky" by Karl Jenkins and Take Six, album called SUNNY JIM, released by De Wolfe Music in 1980 (not 1975). https://www.dewolfemusic.com/search.php?code=Aklgqg&id=18584718...

Re: COMING UP NEXT

Sorry, I should have clarified that I wasn't responsing to you directly! Just posting on the topic in general, that was my bad. And yeah, just to piggyback off the convo above, we really wanted to stress what this hack was like for everyone, but also to raocow as well. It looks like an lp is inevit...

Re: COMING UP NEXT

Ultimately, raocow can choose what he wants to play. We marked yump 2 as kaizo:light and this wasn't a decision taken lightly. We felt the hack was substantially hard and brutal enough to elicit a kaizo:light ranking. This is going to obviously decrease the number of people that play it, and that's ...

Re: COMING UP NEXT

So YUMP 2 was made for an audience of the level makers, but was still distributed openly to the public. But from what I can tell, nothing was explicitly stated on the page advertising the hack or anything similar to suggest this; they'd just see it as "a hack by the team that made X, Y, and Z." As ...

Re: COMING UP NEXT

Hopefully we don't get any more level names like that one. That level's name was truly the icing on the cake for how awful it is. There is nothing in the hack remotely related to that level, so no worries. Also, the author of that level himself is gay, so it's unlikely it was meant to be an insult....

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - 1he First place entry...well d0ne to all.

So wait, how much did they use outside of Lunar Magic? Earlier in the LP I was trying to make my own “vanilla” smw level as a learning exercise and to better understand and appreciate what goes into these things — I used yy-chr for a few extra background/scenery tiles, but otherwise was putting thi...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - grav1tyF0

He didn't do anything wrong, the first half is quite poorly designed, especially by my standards today. There's a lot of stuff in this level that I would have done differently now, looking back on this 3 year old level I feel somewhat embarrassed about some things. I would probably have redone the e...

Re: VIP6 - Nara

There's a few things that made the vips special when they came out. The first is the clever design and use of unusual tricks and gimmicks. The second would be that every level felt unique (thanks cozyduck for pointing this out to me). At the time of their release, a lot of hacks had levels that were...

Re: VIP6 - Gifu

I'm vibing with Rift Valley Athletic for some reason, even though it's pretty standard and simple. The design is just very solid. The look is largely vanilla but the coffee lava combined with the mushroom tileset just looks super nice to me for some reason.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - OK still looking at 100th! To level or not to level...

On smwc, the categories for difficulty are broken down like so: -Kaizo:light - possible without tools (and intended to be rta). -Kaizo:hard - either impossible without tools or the author so clearly intended tool-use that not using them is miserable. -Pit: abuses constant frame perfect tricks and us...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - We've passed 100th! Prelude to 'the!

It's been suggested by several people that a creativity contest would be a nice idea to have. The contest would focus on what sort of creative ideas you can create with LM, whether that be compelling and interesting stories, creative atmosphere and aesthetics, or even using ASM to come up with a uni...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - We've passed 100th! Prelude to 'the!

Why does every conversation have to mention jump? What does that have to do with anything? Anyway, I do disagree with the judges that this isn't a "level", cause it is. And it's quite creative. But when we host contests on smwc, it's generally accepted that the "level design" category is a component...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - We've hit 100th now! Also raocow liked the new level

I thought this level was quite creative and I probably would have personally ranked it higher myself had I been a judge, but I also have to wholeheartedly agree with Rameau on both points. One, we have to be careful to separate the viewer experience from the playing experience (in both situations). ...

Re: VIP6 - Yamagata

The fact that the hack community has created this expectation of amazing final bosses at the end of hacks is the bane of the modern hacker lol. There's a handful of people that can code at the level of worldpeace/carol. But it also takes a seriously massive amount of time and the undertaking is prob...

Re: VIP6 - Akita

idol takes it to the extreme but plenty of people inside and outside the jump team do it. It's not exclusive to one group of designers (idk why jump team even needs to be mentioned, what do they have to do with anything lol). I guess I should clarify that this style isn't just about whether there's ...

Re: VIP6 - Akita

Maybe the dirt decor? Most Japanese hackers don't really bother trying to "decorate" thier levels outside of palettes and custom backgrounds/foregrounds. In "western" hacking (I put western in quotes because we toss everything non-Japanese in there), it's like 50/50 whether the designer cares about ...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Oh boy here we go

There was a gap year between vldcx and vldc11, so vldcx actually occured in 2017. SMWC and hacking as a whole has changed in a surprising amount of ways since then, and we've certainly learned some lessons from what happened. In the ruleset, it stated that you should mention in your intro level mess...

Re: 2 MICE - 2 - paramice

I just want to add that from my interactions with both authors, neither strike me as the type to genuinely be anti-accessibility. idol was a large proponent for accessibility in one jump project and I recall SNN being a big fan of how JUMP 1/2 was easier and more accessible than JUMP 1

Re: 2 MICE - 1 - the miceix reloaded

I quite liked this hack. It has a lot of creativity Edit: there has also been a bit of talk about the description on smwc saying "we hate jump team now". This is just classic idol humor and should not be taken seriously, as both idol and SNN are in the jump chat and talk to everyone there regularly,...

Re: request grab-bag

Most people in the hacking community don't really consider the Hyper series to be Kaizo, despite its tremendous difficulty. Hyper 6 is probably the hardest non-Kaizo hack ever made. But a lot of the difficulty comes from extreme length and unfairness, which are usually avoided in Kaizo. The style is...

Re: Super SIG World 38 - So It Goes

[Insert surprised pikachu] I'm sorry my post was harsh, it ended up being more harsh than it sounded in my head. I just wanted to show that there are some interesting things that SIG does. The idea that all 2,000+ of the levels he's made are the exact same is just not a good conclusion to make, as o...
