Re: idiot wind

Come on guys, the most raocowesque Bob Dylan song is clearly "Ballad of a Thin Man", addressed to "Stupid Guy" Mike Jones.

Re: Wandersong - Sognando

So we are on Earth. This is actually a curious thing about games...to what degree is "Earth" meant to refer specifically to our planet, and what degree does it simply mean "the planet where the work takes place", and to what degree does this matter if the world is defined as ours yet sufficiently d...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Chem1calF0 + Top 1(F)0 time!

I lay down for a bit a moment ago, and I had a dream that idol was being interviewed about this level by this guy who normally makes whiskey videos for YouTube. Most of the conversation concerned the red-scaled, white-robed lizard priests in the level, some of whom had extra, modular heads arranged ...

It must be fun to be a Vortigaunt. You can just add "Vort-" on to everything and say it's totally a new word.

Re: Half-Life 2 - Episode 2 - Chariots of War

Why do these guys need Gordon again? And get enslaved by the Bem pre-1? The implication from the first game seems to be that Vortigaunts, despite their magic lightning powers, are quite physically weak and frail compared to humans, so having a heavily armed man in a powersuit around for protection ...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Archival Purposes

It's certainly a difficult thing today to look at this level with a dispassionate eye knowing the author and what's been revealed about them in the meantime, but I'll just say this about the rankings in general: As we've discussed before, watching a playthrough of a level is necessarily going to be ...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - And now, back to the show!

Fun fact: when I was writing my judging comments for Crystal Chamber, my spellcheck (yes, I at least used a spellcheck, even though I clearly didn't proofread things on account of my collected comments being the length of a short novel) suggested I change the phrase "I question the wisdom of making ...

I should note that this is at least the second time that I've accidentally referred to the player as "the viewer" in my comments. Feel free to read the sinister hidden meaning of your choice in to this wacky word-wielding.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - And now, Daizo's level...

I suspect if you like the æsthetic style of, say, Faxanadu, you'll like the visual style of Swiss Sparkles Inc. If you don't like that sort of style, you'll probably find it less appealed. I tend to fall more in to the former category, myself.

Re: Half-Life 2 - Episode 1 - The Phantom Crowbar

Fair enough, though Breen's part of the conversation just happening to play at that moment for some reason does seem a bit of a heavy-handed "Hey, player, remember this?" Other games would have probably handled the connection by showing it as a brief a flashback, but because of this series's approac...

Re: Half-Life 2 - Lost in the Sauce

We also get our first look at what are believed to be the actual Combine: those giant slug things in pods. In the game data they are referred to as "Advisors". Whether that means they are the top dogs in the Combine and "advise" their slaves on what to do, or if they are intermediaries to some even...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Pseudo Water is Vanilla???

Since raocow invoked a metaphor for farting in Mad Lad's level, I can only assume he hated the level on account of its dystopian setting.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Wow, a few hours early!

For those confused by my judging comment for the second level, this is what you find if you bring the springboard found in the interior section back to the gap in the ceiling found slightly earlier in the level.

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - We've hit 100th now! Also raocow liked the new level

for the record i would give this a way higher score if i judged it today. i hated things that were particularly difficult back then but have since come around full circle and am now of the camp that penalizing levels for difficulty alone is unfair. i don't think that level is without flaws, mind yo...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - The Normal's Disco Bright

At this point, I'm genuinely questioning how Gorgon's Garden placed this high [...] If you could actually see things in that level, it'd probably be so much better. The latter statement here is basically the reason for the former. We're judging the level according to various categories, generally c...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - The Normal's Disco Bright

Not that it has a name. In this particularcontext, this ends up sounding like an insult, but it's actually simply meant as a reference to the fact that there's no level name on the overworld, and since the files I received were just a bunch of numbers, this was my only source for a name. From my pe...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - The Normal's Disco Bright

The nets in Three Ambience Castle are indeed vines (they also use the background window grating for their graphics rather than the normal netting graphic tiles). Their frames--which, in the case of the normal net tiles, should be full climbable)--are, however a separate, purely decorative tile (usin...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - What are these boxes? Do they have wompa fruits?!

I am more surprised by the 47 than the 0 tbh EDIT: This is not to speak ill of the 47, of course, I'm just thinking my score would have been a lot closer to 0 than to 47 had I been a judge Other issues aside, I could barely see/parse anything in that level and I wasn't even then one playing it As a...
