Re: All The S@nics - Spinball - Going Full Tilt

I tried playing the Game Gear version of this once. It was almost literally unplayable (and there was certainly no "all flippers" button). This, in contrast, I'm assured is "the good one", so I expect no problems for raocow from here on out.

Re: All The S@nics - Chaos - LEATHER, LACE, YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!

The Mecha Green Hill Zone is the one thing in addition to the opening chase scene which reminded me that I did, in fact, play this game as a child. Somehow I remembered it having a lot more animation, though, with rotating pinwheel flowers and the like. It *is* a pretty striking stage idea, but alas...

Re: Donkey Kong Country 2 -- This Guy?

Actually, many dictionaries list “kwā” as a valid pronunciation, though it’s not the main 1 & isn't the original pronunciation, & I think that may be dictionaries accommodating common mispronunciations. It should be no surprise by now that English pronunciation has no logical connection to spelling...

Re: Donkey Kong Country 2 -- A Mysterious Attack

raocow, how could you mispronounce "quay"? It's a flipping French loanword (albeit it with /ɛ/ parsed as /i/ for some reason*). Rattle Battle is hands down my favorite stage in the game. The weird, surreal palette affected me deeply as a child (and influenced the æsthetic of my dreams at the time), ...

Re: Donkey Kong Country 2 -- Itch Explosion

I'll be honest--I've played this game inside-out, and I had no idea you could defeat Krunchas by throwing you friend at them until this playthrough. It's something I absolutely must have tried as a child, but somehow I must have come to the conclusion early on that it just makes them angry like jump...

Re: Donkey Kong Country 2 -- Subterraneans of Darkness

Honestly, pretty much everything involving speed, agility, reflex-based dodging, and climbing is significantly easier with Diddy. As is the final boss, to a lot of people's surprise. Dixie's helicopter spin is a super-useful tool, but it's a bit of a beginner trap to become too reliant on it, as it'...

Re: Donkey Kong Country 2 -- Walking Disaster

Oh...raocow jumping on on the cave entrance at the start of Hot Head Hop only to completely ignore the hidden treasure chest there was distressing.

That said, I always loved the mine song as well. I used to hum along to the choral part as a child. Still do, really.

Re: Donkey Kong Country 2 -- Crab and Job Hunting

So let me see if I understand raocow's argument against Rattly, The Best Animal Friend here: raocow: "Sure, Rattly may be better than that clumsy dork Winky in every conceivable way, but if we lived in an alternative universe where Winky had been made to not suck, he would be just as good!" Yep, tha...

Well, it's a good thing that Act 3 was considerably shortened (yet still kept distinct from Act 2) on account of that fearsome boss.

Re: All The S@nics - SegaSonic Bros. - DO NOT STEAL!

So let me see if I can get this concept straight: There are multiple Sonics, but there are also multiples of each multiple. They slowly descend from the heavens, but you can make them fall faster, causing them to scream out briefly before making contact with some solid surface, whereupon they transf...

Re: All The S@nics - 2 - I Could Go Super Sonic...

Fun fact: Whenever I see the box art for this game, I would always parse the title as "Sonic 2: The Hedgehog". I'm glad to see the logo on the final screen of the game continues this proud tradition.

Re: All The S@nics - 2 - I Could Go Super Sonic...

A confession: I've always found the robots you battle far more charismatic than the animal dorks you free from them. This is probably due in a large part to the fact that a disproportionate number of the robots are crabs.

Honestly, much like raocow and Hilltop Zone, this is the one area in this game I invariably forget exists. Its violet hues must moonlight in the ultra range, for it repeatedly fades to invisibility in my poor, three-color-receptored brain.

Re: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - EVW

I always thought it was weird how Martinet decided to do an exaggerated rolled 'r' in the "thunder" voice clip. I never really thought rolled r's were a big thing in Italian. Not only is it very much a thing in Italian, I would go so far as to say it's even more of a thing in Italian than, say, Spa...

Re: chico virtual wario tierra

Honestly, the stylized image of this boss on his emblem looks way cooler than the actual man in person. I was expecting a mysterious lord of the void, but it was really just some grumpy old dude named Gramps with a glass nose and no lower body. Meeting celebrities in real life can sometimes be a dis...

Re: All The S@nics - 2 - I Could Go Super Sonic...

You know, I feel like actually giving the hammer a hitbox here would have been a pretty simple and effective way to prevent the player from cheesing the boss as raocow did. At least Tails is dumb enough to demonstrate how the fight was intended to work...

Re: All The S@nics - 2 - I Could Go Super Sonic...

So, is it ever explained why Tails (or "Tails" as this game appears to insist upon derisively calling him) is able to defeat robots by jumping in to them while curled up in a ball? It kind of makes sense for Sonic, because he has spikes on his back. But Tails just has hair. And not even long whippy ...

I don't know what raocow's going on about; "Pestnut" is non-ironically one of the best enemy names of all time. I couldn't stop snickering the first time I saw it.

Re: All The S@nics - 1 (8-Bit) - Bridging The Generation Gap

Like everyone else here, I prefer this Labyrinth Zone theme. However, I prefer the mellow, slower-tempoed version from TSRPR even more. I think the clear lesson here is that we need more jazzy beats in our flooded ancient ruins.
