Trust me, there haven't been too many. A few, sure, but most of it is either content addition, or features made to facilitate said addition.

Re: Level Contest Japan - platforming horses

IMO that's the way it should be.That or go full lua to where it's not even remotely a platformer anymore. I mean, I was just saying it's cool that the level uses Lua sparingly and very deliberately, not that that kind of approach should be applied to all levels/projects or that it's somehow more va...

Bullet Heaven has some pretty nice design. Not a fan of the banzai blaster graphics, though.

Too bad I made this for the contest and not after it. Also, IT'S HER is going into the version updated to use Beta 4 tech, which I'll put out when Beta 4 drops.

Re: Level Contest Japan - cave story

The pause message thing is, like the broad design and graphical elements, lifted from the original game but modified with additional quotes and with some references removed - which itself I think may be a nod to Eversion . God I love Pause Ahead and I love this re-imagination of it with Mario. I ha...

Re: Level Contest Japan - cave story

Ducking was disabled for two reasons: It had some bugs I didn't want to bother fixing (it was hard enough getting the pause mechanic to be robust as it is, especially combined with the respawning), and I also chose not to design around it, just as with powerups, small Mario, and different playables....

Re: Level Contest Japan - cave story

It's not original though, and I think most of the levels are copied from the original? The things that are not original are the graphics, music, and concept, and it's not like most levels deviate from Mario in especially the first two. The room design is entirely original. The writing is mostly ori...

Huh. I never realized that this was the original source, let alone there being any.
Agh, this after all my efforts, including in the level itself, to communicate that my level isn't entirely original.

Re: Level Contest Japan - cave story

Neat, how'd you make the screen not scroll in the cave map? I guess it's possible now to make the map not scroll after certain points? Effectively making map edges? Cool. Though I wonder how that can break with the 'walk anywhere' cheat? I set the camera's x and y coordinates to a fixed value if th...

Re: Level Contest Japan - spike zone hell

My favorite part is how somehow the boss fucked up the life counter so every death against her counted as two deaths The death counter integration was added by Enjl, and min/max's code is...uhh........ I'm gonna guess the boss somehow runs the custom insta-respawn death code Enjl hooked into, but a...

I really like Negative Space, it's probably in my top 5. It's not the silhouette style, but that it integrates so well, and so intuitively, with the gameplay.

Re: Level Contest Japan - this isn't mario?

As I stated, this was my first time working with lua. A huge issue was that I have no idea how to loop things or set things to a finite pattern when a variable is between values. I think it had something to do with that "for k, v" thing, but I didn't understand it at all, so I just did ev...

Re: Level Contest Japan - this isn't mario?

As for how this level came to be, this was my first time working with lua. I pretty much just experimented with what I thought looked good. The cutscene at the beginning was my way of finding out just how easy it was to load custom graphics. The possibilities really are endless with that. I chose t...
