Re: Spyro (2) - Spyro's Gnice Day

Dragon Shores is a really nice place, and is a nice bit of an unwind and a timekiller, though it is also a collection of minigames, as well. The ultimate reward for completing Dragon Shores is nice... and what's used to completely break speedruns of the game. Yep, that's a fun time. Regardless, the ...

Re: Spyro (2) - Ripto's Rage!

Looking back on things... Ripto may just be the best boss fight in the whole series. Even if Ripto himself is kind of unimpressive as a villain compared to Gnasty Gnorc. Both sides getting powerups is a great idea, and it's done marvelously here. Gulp's fight did it, too, but less pronounced than Ri...

Re: Spyro (2) - City of the Sheep's Desire

Metropolis is a good level to end the game on, it does feel like a finalle of sorts. Though the rocket pigs do just have a tendancy to blow themselves up, making level progression quite a bit easier. The Headsmash feels like it has a good purpose here, and the orb missions are pretty fun! Superfligh...

Re: Spyro (2) - Applebee's Doodad

I mean, those robots are just meant to be robots living their lives. Robotica Farms is neat, though the scarecrow orb mission is kind of a nothing one, and the hazardous barrels aren't often in your way. The robot wasps are, but they can indeed be flamed down like most non-armored enemies can. The ...

Re: Spyro (2) - Wizards' Peak

Yeah, the headsmash could have been a lot better. More movement options tends to gel well with most platformers, and Spyro would be no exception on that front. Besides that, though, Cloud Temples is rather fleshed out. There's an obvious conflict here, the enemies are quite the threat (though most o...

Re: The Legend of Spyro - just kidding, it's Spyro 2

Mystic Marsh is the most intriguing level structurally. It absolutely feels like Spyro 1 in multiple parts, and one of the quests is even to chase multiple thieves around the level! (And they're more difficult than aerage) You have to wonder if this level was slated for Spyro 1, but cut since Gnasty...

Re: Spyro (2) - Hunter's Toys

Canyon Speedway is shockingly simple for a speedway. Even the Hunter mission isn't too bad, though the targets can just slip by pretty quickly. The music and theming of the speedway is nice, though. While it's a place you can point to to show the later part of the game is rushed, it's not true for e...

Re: Spyro (2) - Elora's Disappointment

I'll echo the fact that Winter Tundra is a product of rushed development. That being said, it's not a bad hub world, just the final one. It works for what it needs to work for, which is being the final act of the game, and the one leading up to the encounter with Ripto. The headbash is pretty underw...

Re: Spyro (2) - look! Gulp's over

Gulp is definitely a step up from Crush, but he's still not too menacing if you know what you're doing. Namely, charging around the arena makes him a lot easier, though Gulp does also lead his missle shots, even in the original. Gulp just doesn't lead shots as consistently compared to the remake. No...

Re: Spyro (2) - Autumn's Fall

Alas, poor Earthshapers here, indeed. Magma Cone is a level where I wouldn't blame you at all for rooting for the enemy. Level's pretty neat overall. The music here is definitely unique, and it's not until today that I understood the "oh no" in the track. Shooting the partyshapers is a bit...

Re: Spyro (2) - George's Dinner

I've kind of just accepted that raocow's going to charge into the metal vases one at a time. Doesn't want to lunge into an abyss and all that. The two of us play Spyro very differently, and it doesn't mean either of us are wrong for thinking so. Crystal Glacier's a nice introduction to Summer Forest...

Re: Spyro (2) - Newton's Apple

Eventually, raocow will figure out what the headbash actually does. But not today, because I'm not going to tell him what it does! Shady Oasis is a nice callback to the thief-infested Spyro 1 by having a level full of them! The shielded thief is fairly unique that its shield actually blocks one char...

Re: Spyro (2) - Ripto's clearly being used as a scapegoat for Avalar's chaotic state

Oh boy, Fractured Hills. Here we go. First of all, the Earthshapers... might not be endemic to these lands? At this point, it's a coinflip as to who are the natives around these parts. I would say that rooting for the bad guys not named Ripto and co. isn't that strange. I've... learned to root again...

Re: Spyro (2) - Ripto's clearly being used as a scapegoat for Avalar's chaotic state

That's a good thumbnail, I love it. Scorch... it sounds like a boss level, but it's not. Just a regular level that has a lot of enemies. The music is still real good here, and the flagkeeper mission proves that it's fun enough to romp through the level geometry multiple times. But raocow does indeed...

Re: Spyro (2) - Spyro's military-industrial complex

Breeze Harbor is truly excellent. Reflecting on it, it's probably my favorite level in the whole game. It does feel very Spyro 1 in its design, including with the music, which, as mentioned before, would fit right at home in Beast Makers. The enemies aren't *quite* as threatening as the ones in the ...

Re: Spyro (2) - Ripto's isolationist policy towards a land that clearly has dragons in it

Skelos Badlands is pretty neat! Definitely feels Spyro 1 in its design, except for the whole utilizing rocks to shoot at bat creatures. (they aren't dragons) Yeah, you don't really solve anything here, it feels like, but the whole thing is just disconnected from Ripto in general in all obvious ways....

Re: Spyro (2) - A Slug's Life

Spyro doesn't entirely understand Zephyr, and that's fine by me. The whole world's taken over by birds... though we never really know the why about the whole hostile takeover. It's not explained in detail at all. What I do know is that the level's long and quite tedious, thanks to no small part to t...

Re: Spyro (2) - Spyro's Rampage

And now cleanup's done! I'm just going to condense what I would say yesterday and today into one message, because the yesterday stuff wasn't a lot. The idol actually only hates the red fish, but the player would definitely not know that until they're told, so the whole minigame there ends up being a...

Re: Spyro (2) - Crush's Dungeon? more like Crush's Done

Crush... there's probably a long story with him we didn't know. Regardless. Finally, Aquaria Towers. This place is a tough one to 100%, and a lot of it is in the gem placement. There's gems hidden all over, and some of them are in super sneaky places. I have no idea why Hunter has a manta, but here ...

Re: Spyro (2) - Crush's Dungeon? more like Crush's Done

I like that headcanon. Crush would be dumb enough to do that. So yeah, Spyro 2 has bosses that feel like bosses! That's great. It's really more of a proximity thing Crush is looking for to swing his club on the latter half of the fight; the angles raocow took were just (typically) good enough to dod...

Re: Spyro (2) - SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Thunder Creek

Hurricos is my favorite level in Summer Forest, and just one of my favorites in Spyro 2 in general. The platforming and supercharges are quite challenging at its hardest, and it does feel Spyro 1-like in its design, for the most part. As for the enemies, I feel like Ripto may have gone and disrupted...

Re: Spyro (2) - happy starfish belongs to everyone c:

Maybe the minimap takes away from the mystique of exploring the level and finding out the layout for ones' self. There's definitely games where the minimap is a big help. Spyro 2 just doesn't have the most helpful one. Anyways, Sunny Shore. It's yet another level plagued by ladders, and having sever...

Re: Spyro (2) - Ripto's Race

Well... it's kind of difficult for me to really say my full feelings on Aquaria Towers if a whole segment of level wasn't found. Re: Spyro (2) - Ripto's Race

Yeah, Ripto's forces in general are quite... undefined. Are those yaks supposed to be aligned with Ripto? The boundary is pretty unclear. As for the speedways, they do feel similar to Spyro 1, but the addition of your charging also being powered up adds another aspect to them, and one that adds to t...
