A big difference between the old and new draft is that the old one makes clear the back of the store is dangerous; the new draft just says "gone cuckoo" (which, also, I personally find a little too similar to the "gone bonkers" the clerk has just said). I'd suggest replacing that...

I recommend you just go ahead and draft the scene the way you want and see if people object afterwards. It's easier to critique when there's an actual scene - an idea on its own is harder to evaluate. And you're probably going to adjust the scene after feedback anyways, so it won't even be that much...
