Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- tim horton's betrayal

Yeah, it was the factory remix created for the 7th VLDC. It was part of a pack of about 5-10ish other tracks, with a couple more being added during the 8th and 9th VLDC (most people likely remember how ubiquitous the abstract remix was in those...).

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Today, Twice

ahoy, mateys! i've been trying for some days, without any luck, to find out the identity (and download location) of daizo's "meh" BGM from his super mario bros? entry might anyone be able to help me, or point me to where i can go, that's a solid lead? i haven't even been able to find where the leve...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- Today, Twice

If the entire midpoint path got taken out (seriously?), and the layer 2 platforms weren’t so broken, this would have probably been a top 10 contender. There were a ton of fascinating ideas here, but unfortunately, the whole level felt held together by string and masking tape. Also, apparently when y...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- One ninth of Ninety-Nine

I didn’t play any of the entries in this contest other than like 3, but I’m actually impressed with the quality of these first-timer levels that have been popping up. “Bounce and climb!” in particular was super pleasant, and it makes me happy to see that people are still attempting to get into SMW h...

Re: Donkey Kong Country 2 -- Subterraneans of Darkness

I've never played this (shameful, I know), and so have a question: is there any benefit to using Diddy instead of Dixie other than "he holds things in front of him rather than overhead?" (I'm thinking here of a unique character ability like Dixie's glide twirl or Donkey Kong's ground pound in DKC1;...

Re: La-Mulana - Wishbringer

You did an excellent job on getting through this. I'm curious to see how the sequel goes - I personally found it quite a bit more challenging (and, aside from the odd game-breaking bug, a better experience overall). Since it sounds like you're going into it 100% blind, it's definitely going to be a ...

Re: La-Mulana - The Lurking Horror

Spoilers for the sequel: Which boss? If you're thinking the boss of Icefire Treetops, that fight has changed significantly and is much fairer after the most recent patches. Would have guessed Echidna, who was a total shitshow of a boss. I couldn't beat her without the gun, whereas with the boss of ...

Re: JUMP½ - Half a jump is still a jump

I found JUMP’s difficulty curve a bit too excessive for my tastes, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about the fairness of Half’s, so I’m actually really eager to give this a spin on the weekend. Guess I’ll have to sit out on watching the LP until I make some headway into the game. Nice work on...

Re: La-Mulana - The Worm in Paradise

Is the Eden puzzle exclusive to the remake? I played the original a million years ago so I don't really recall, but I swear you could just enter the Gate of Illusion like any other field. That's some pretty awesome atmosphere whiplash either way.

Re: La-Mulana - Bigger Than You Think

I think the Temple of Moonlight theme is one of the few cases where I prefer the remixed version to the original. It's so good.

Re: La-Mulana - The Edifice

man, I beat this game close to 10 years ago and I forgot how exciting it is to play through. this is definitely one of my most anticipated LPs in a long time. best of luck - this is going to be a hell of a journey.

(still super prefer the original music over the remastered versions though :( )

I'm pretty sure the overworld music is the Shiver Star map theme from Kirby 64, albeit heavily different in its atmosphere. It's actually super nice.

Re: Celeste - K2

8C is super tough as well, but

I love how most of the gimmicks from the earlier levels are brought back in the final room. It really makes the last gauntlet of the game feel climactic.

Re: What games are you playing?

I'm also on the La-Mulana 2 train, having played 1 almost a decade ago. It's quite the step up, but still retains some of that bullshit "charm" that the first game had - namely, the instant death traps everywhere . Spoiler of where I am so far: Just got the Egg of Creation in the Takamagahara Shrine...

3A was one of my favorite chapters, personally. Hated 3C though, so I'm curious to see how raocow handles that last room.

Re: Celeste - Broad Peak (Gasherbrum was greedy)

Yeah, 6B was the first stage that I found really nasty. I stayed under 250ish deaths for most of the B-sides but I think I got about 550 on 6B.

The remix is awesome though.

Re: here he is, chocolate level design contest.com 2018 - pepsi cans

That second level felt like it was made by someone from the JUMP team (actually got a lolyoshi vibe from it for whatever reason). Really creative stuff - I’ll be curious to see the author and score once they’re posted.

Re: Celeste - Masherbrum

I love it when games utilize tracks that start off with only one channel, and then gradually build up as the area goes on. In the case of chapter 3, it really brings about a great atmosphere.

Re: Chocolate Level Design Contest 2018 - apples

What was the song that used the KDL3 sound font? It wasn't any KDL3 song that I remember. It’s actually a KDL3 remix of a RtDL track. Really strange and disjointed level today, but other than being all over the place, it wasn’t nearly as offensive as other 2nd last place entries I’ve seen in previo...

Re: Chocolate Level Design Contest 2018 - apples

the reason I'm not jumping into doing vldcx is I heard there are long streches of levels that are just not interesting? if there is enough actual interest I could make room for it in *the list* There were something like 180 entries, so yes, there's a huge swath of mediocrity in the middle. That's k...

Re: Super Mario Doomsday - Global Solar EMP Event

I'd be really curious to hear dev commentary on some of these levels. Like, the level design has been just fine so far - mostly - but there are so many glaringly obvious and easy-to-fix issues that lead me to question whether or not this was tested at all (the P-Switch spawning in the wall is a huge...

Re: Super Mario Doomsday - Y2K Virus

Speaking of the text boxes, it’s also frustrating that the new lines keep starting in the middle of revealing a word rather than putting the whole word on a new line from the get-go. Otherwise, there’s not too much to say yet - more interested in seeing how the levels are than the story, so tomorrow...
