That is so true. The whole story is about Demo going after Charlie guards or whatever, then Demo enters King Charles' Castle, and then, no Charlie around... I don't think it is a good idea in the same way that it isn't a good idea to add new powerups or anything. If you need a level to have no spin jumps, there's a sprite for that. I mentioned this before, but Chocolate Castle (world 3) has no midpoint.

The boss of the same castle doesn't work in snes9x, but does in zsnes. In snes9x, he never throws anything and has infinite health if you fly up to hit him. I don't know ASM, but I have no idea what would cause that.

A life-farming tip: Did you see how the shell went in a pool of water two blocks deep at the end of that level? If you jump in after it, you can bounce on it endlessly without touching the controller. TSRPR had a similar spot and the start of its waterfall level.
