Has raocow done Call of Cthulhu? It's a SMW romhack with some really cool level design and aesthetics ideas, like a level where you need to look at the reflection in the water to see invisible objects. I only heard about it today when dram55 streamed it. raocow would love this hack :)

My guess for why the spike hitboxes seemed wacky is because the game was only checking for collision (or at least certain kinds of collisions) when you were moving up or down.
