OK, went and looked it up, there were plans for an "ASMT v2" with the new A2MT graphics and such, but it doesn't look like it ever happened outside of a patch that fixed the World 3 boss.

I know at the very least some made a "works on real hardware" version.

I kinda hope the version he plays is a remaster with the new a2mt/a2xt graphics, but we'll see.

It probably helps that as a later GBA game, the SP was probably out (too lazy to check sorry) and they could be a little more lenient than with HoD. GBA SP/AGS-001 came out in Japan 14 Feb 2003. AoS came out in NA 6 May 2003 (both per wikipedia). However, apparently the original GBA SP doesn't have...
