Re: VLDC9 - varicolored luminosity deluding canopies 9
I think the judges, in general, allowed the presentation of the levels to colour their "design" scores. Ignis Fatuus was a safe, unexciting level and Subterranean Glow was pretty good but had some flaws. I still think Midnight Arbor was the best designed level in the game - it subtly did s...

Re: VLDC9 - vibrant logs distraught cheveaux 9
I don't think that was a contest-winning level either. The gameplay was just a bit too simple. Honestly, I think FrozenQuills' level had the best gameplay out of the entire contest.

Re: VLDC9 - vibrant logs distraught cheveaux 9
This is probably a pain to compile, but what is each judge's average score? Bonus points if each separate category is totaled up. I'd be curious to see which judges tend toward higher or lower scores.

Re: VLDC9 - vaults lifted dominions crossed 9
Whenever I play games on an emulator, I always drop a save state after I use the in-game save just in case. I'm a little paranoid about that kinda stuff, but it's a good insurance policy.

Sure feels like the judges used a strong combo attack on Hilly Desert. It wasn't that bad.

Re: VLDC9 - vacillating lignification damp coves 9
I don't see multi midpoints as a solution there, the level isn't even that long. It could've been more compact, admittedly, but it should've really just managed the difficulty better. Sheer length is not really a good measure of when midpoints are appropriate, though. If you have a dense and very c...

Re: VLDC9 - vacillating lignification damp coves 9
Misty Swamp Cave is another fantastic example of how a level can turn to shit with having only a single midpoint available to you. I absolutely guarantee it would be better received with, say, four midpoints.

Re: VLDC9 - violet lumber dark conservatories 9
Also to add, I like Grinder Gauntlet even if it felt typical. IMO it should've been higher than 69th since it's kinda fun with its grinder setups and it didn't really do anything wrong. The quality of design has elevated to the point where "kinda fun" and "not doing anything wrong&qu...

Re: VLDC9 - violet lumber dark conservatories 9
Midnight Arbor did a lot of really good things really subtly and it makes me sad that Nimono and NinjaBoy gave it such a low design score.

Re: MaGL 3 results: those poor fish
I'm really not seeing Pyro's complaints on Tyty and FPzero's level. Is there something wrong with a level that tries to just be altogether solid without trying to do something new?

Re: MaGL 3 results: mario kong country
I'll have a better post about the level overall later today when I have more time to sit down and write it. I'm a little surprised that we only made 18th; no lie, we both kind of thought we'd place higher. Sorry if that sounds presumptuous. Regardless, I'm very interested to read the judge commenta...

Re: MaGL 3 results: mario kong country
Hey, I have a question about episode 25. Two levels used Hot-Head Bop as the level music, but the second level's instrumentation was much more accurate to the original. On the other hand, the first level's version of In A Snow-Bound Land was accurate to the original. I don't know how the music works...

Re: MaGL 3 results: elite koopa family reunion
Yeah, I think this level would have benefited tremendously from some culling. Once your level starts getting this long, you have you ask yourself - does this section contribute something new, or is it more of the same? For example, that pipe section near the beginning probably could have gone, as co...

Re: MaGL 3 results: tapping away at your sanity
There are two distinct elements to difficulty: challenge and punishment. Challenge refers to how much skill the player needs to overcome the obstacles. Punishment is the penalty for failure. Engaging difficulty often involves high challenge but low-medium punishment. A good example of this is Super ...

Re: MaGL 3 results: in the next episode: multivariable calculus
I probably would have put the math level last because the actual platforming gameplay is no better than the levels before it and the entire concept is ill-conceived, but, eh.

Re: MaGL X2 - Horikawa x LunaLua OTP
I just realized that if you give people free reign to make extensive gameplay modifications, MaGL X3 is going to be a nightmare to judge with having to learn the nuances of these gameplay mods for each level.

Re: MaGL X2 - Horikawa x Updating the Thread OTP
clearly the best I think this is a bit much to ask for. I think the top scoring levels will all be pretty close in quality. As long as you can make a reasonable argument for the winner being the best, then I think most people will be fine with it. We'll only have a problem if the winner is clearly ...

Re: MaGL X2 - Horikawa x Updating the Thread OTP
Perhaps Horikawa should give scores over the maximum for her personal use and then scale them into the normal point scale for the final submission. She does seem a little eager to give top scores, so this could be a good way to get all the thoughts sorted out. On the other hand, who cares? This is l...

I think it would be neat to see judges' gold/silver/bronze rather than just favourite.Horikawa Otane wrote: Oh believe me, I had way more frustration than raocow hahaha....
Also the first level is my favourite gameplay-focused level in the game! It was another runner-up for my fav this year.

Re: MaGL X2 - Horikawa x Updating the Thread OTP
The Lua level was much more a proof of concept rather than an actually good level. I take it as something to look forward to for MaGLX3.
