Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - Raiding Video 51
I really enjoyed working with the pretty tileset Tyty came up with. Honestly half the time I feel like that's what I should stick to, lol. And yeah, with how we do contests today both of our names would've been on it. The design process was something like I made the level, sent it to FP, and then h...

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest X - The Normal's Disco Bright
Personally I'm of the opinion that, at least with regards to a contest where you enter a single level, secret exits don't really have a place. Often times people will either just slap them on the end, or use it as an excuse to enter multiple levels. I think kinda the middle, towards the front half o...

Re: All The E.G.G.M.E.N. - Adventure 2 - HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT, OBAMA?!
But I've never actually seen the Dreamcast version, so it's interesting to see where certain things differ in cutscenes and elsewhere. For example, the red lighting overlay in parts of Iron Gate are completely missing in the Gamecube version, so I was surprised to see those. The HD has even more......

Re: Vanilla Level Design Contest 11 -- tim horton's betrayal
I actually ended up running into a lot of problems with the brown platforms. Despite using SA1, they still eat up a -ton- of sprite slots, so I was constantly running into issues with them or other sprites disappearing, especially in the latter half. I ended up making a lot of the setups simpler to ...

Re: 24 Hour Contest #11 - design a level in 24 hours with a given challenge
I really didn't have a problem with the contest, but I ended up using an easy box. That said, the one thing that bothered me was that we were told we would potentially lose points for not using the whole box.... but then I don't think anyone actually did, so some levels that ditched the shitty sprit...

Re: cldc 2018 - layers
Honestly, I noticed the big level but Mode 0 was way cooler to me. So many moving parts is really cool, and Mario works really well with the 8-bit colors.
I didn't like the boss much though.

Re: chocolate hack design contest - ten shots per screen
how people feel about this level is usually how i feel about levels like miraclewater's entry - really interesting stuff, but just too much of it. it's interesting to see how this is where other people cross the line on that, i suppose i get burnt out on a level a lot quicker. I agree with you here...

Re: chocolate *** design contest 2018 - propeller
I had a problem with the growy boys like the first dragon coin throughout the whole level, they just kept shrinking too fast for me to use them right. Level was cute and I didn't notice Mario's face because I never got hit. It was pretty flat with mostly just ground-crawling enemies though. Maybe th...

Re: ft029ldc2 2018 - fish
I think it's funny that this has become the JUMP-style cause that is certainly not how most of the people who contributed to the first Jump make levels, or how most of the first hack even plays. You'll find that the levels that *do* feel like super long gauntlet levels are not very methodical at al...

Re: ft029ldc2 2018 - fish
I think, at least for me, I started calling "JUMP-style" levels Gauntlet levels, because that's what it feels like. A similar design ethos to Kaizo without any of the implied difficulty or tricks. A series of challenges in a row to be beaten, usually focusing on a singular gimmick (and som...

Re: CeLesteDC 2018 - removing the ability to move
Yeah, out of all the levels I played Moldy Moonscape ended up being my absolute favorite. It was really well constructed and I really liked the parts where you had to bounce on enemies because it felt like an added layer on top of the VVVVV mechanics.

Re: someone talk to me about god 2018 - screen-edge scrolling
Because it allows you to have a full-screen layer 3 bg and honestly looks kinda slick. I agree the item indicator could be better (or it could pop out of Mario ala nsmb) there's also SMB3 styled ones. The alternative is a sprite status bar. I'm not sure if that has any implications with the amount o...

Re: chogolate 2018 - friendly little key with friendly little feet
Maybe I should've finished my backup judging. Then I could've been a controversy scapegoat.
I really really didn't like the math level playing it, it took me like an hour to beat and I kept game-overing lol. Lots of one-attempt or die obstacles and I had severe issues with the wall jump blocks.

Re: SMB4 SMW TSRP2R Zycloboo's Challenge v2.2 - Daylight Saving Time Valley
Completely disagree. Vanilla SMW looks much better than Redrawn I say that because it was consistent (unlike SMW), and it's "all we had" because original gfx were kinda a mess at the time (Many slots, lots of map16, all different styles). Actually messing with ripped graphics and mixing s...

Re: SMB4 SMW TSRP2R Zycloboo's Challenge v2.2 - Daylight Saving Time Valley
I'm not a super huge fan of the TSRP series or TSRPR, so I never really messed with TSRPR2 before. The OW being all speckly looks kinda weird. Oh no, why is this using that terrible, ugly, overused sprite set. Redrawn was the best we had for a while, it's weird to see them in a hack even from 3 year...

I'm glad I can watch someone else play this because quite honestly after a glance amidst the C3 hype I really didn't want to go any further. Re: SUPER MARIO 152 - FPzero & Tyty play VLDC9
What I meant by that is more... creativity doesn't always mean fun. Sure we haven't hit a wall in weird exploits but I've never found levels that use variable scroll interactive layer 2 very fun to play personally. I don't think cranking up the weird interactions and things that, honestly actually d...

Re: MAGLX3 - Pre-Discussion/Feedback Thread
I think I mentioned it in the voting but I'm not sure on the difficulty option, it feels to me like everyone is just going to take hard. Why would you ever take the normal option if you're trying to win? I'm kinda iffy on the forced NPC as well, but that's more because I'm still not used to SMBX and...

Re: Super ASPE Mario - All Stars Popsicle Edition
The music port on the MMBN stage could've been better (I -think- that's the MMBN3 version but it's very honky trumpets), but it was at least a cute idea. One of my favorite series and a shame it's dead. I like Bowser's wallpaper. LUDWIG.EXE is a neat boss but I think the stage's powerups are a bit s...

Re: LunaLua Help
But of an odd question. Is there a way to draw something behind the player without putting it on their sprite sheet? Basically I'd like to imitate how the cape animates in SMW on a custom character, so it can animate independently and be drawn regardless of powerup state.
