Not further than VII though, like. It had steady competition at the time from games like Arc the Lad II and the 32bit versions of Lunar 1&2, even games like Guardian's Crusade with its simpler, more sugary story had extremely charming writing. Sorry for being hard to understand.
  • KobaBeach3 days ago
VII is a good game though, I'm just stating that game stories had been elevated further around the PSX and SAT era, the later MGS1 would be a fine example.
  • KobaBeach3 days ago
VI can ruin expectations by being an absurdly well written game compared to a lot of JRPGs at the time, though. Likewise with VII, minus the being better than a lot of games (still really good writing though if a bit too convoluted to the point of confusion!), a lot of people were doing good shit at the time in both the JRPG and non-JRPG space, bad translations notwithstanding. But VII did spawn a generation of JRPG nerds so who knows.

Sometimes I do want an easier game though so I play a lot of the easy stuff too. Like FFVII and VI are super easy apart from some minor difficulty spikes (Kefka at Narshe, Carry Armor...). FFVI actually lets you retain your EXP through game overs similar to DQ but without the money halving penalty, so it's a very good beginner's RPG.

Along with some Sword, Gun and Martial Arts skills I sparked, an AGUNI-CP1 I got from drops and an Energy Bazooka you can get in the guard lockers in Despair, I was able to do well against Nidheg (Nidhogg), without it being a gimmie, either Lyza or Annie got owned, no permadeath thankfully.
  • KobaBeach3 days ago
First thing I did when I started SaGa Frontier again the other day was grind a bit to raise Emelia, Annie and Liza (now Lyza because there's already a Romancing 2 unit named Liza, after Liza Minelli)'s stats, especially HP to around the early to mid 100s range, Emelia starts with like 50 in a brand new file with no cleared scenarios.

I enjoy puzzles so I enjoy RPG bosses that aren't either too bullshit (7th Saga US or a lot of Working Designs gameplay edits) or too braindead (a lot of JRPGs). It's why I like SaGa and turn based strategy RPGs a lot. The fact the option to gain levels in a lot of them (not so much SaGa, you can still gain stats tho ^^) exists is good too, as it allows it to be enjoyed by people who aren't good at the game as well.

er, instead of bashing your noggin against the same scenario i mean

i just have a deep-seated desire for control which mostly goes away in a pen-and-paper setting where a TPKO usually results in something interesting instead of "game over, do that again but better". like even if everyone really DOES die you're still given stuff for your new characters or campaign to do next by the GM

of course in pen & paper you can do stuff like have a living dungeon be a part of your party if your dm so wills it and you happen to have high enough charisma and good rolls to put them on your side i believe, which i've only seen earthbound do
  • KobaBeach4 days ago
i haven't played pen & paper yet but this is what i can gather so [citation needed]
