I thought so too, but every English speaker I know (with the exception of an Australian girl who says "evangeline" for some reason) says it with a hard g (like "ee-van-geh-lee-on") and that's more or less how they say it in Japan too.

@KobaBeach the brazilian dub says evangelion with a soft g, which probably pisses off purists, but it sounds more natural in portuguese
