Maryland is a colony which was originally given to Lord Baltimore, who intended to use the land as a safe haven for English Catholics, as opposed to England, which at the time was strictly Anglican. However, the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649 allowed an early form of religious tolerance to take place, as it allowed both Protestants and Catholics to occupy the land.
