Okay... so in the midst of all this I figured I'd try some hacking... so far it's done in pseudovanilla style. I try to make it look as SMWish as possible.

Version 1

Version 2

Tell me what you think, point out any glaring issues, etc.

I'm making a hack of a different type, not one with a large plot, and currently one sans bosses... but what it is, I think will be helpful for people interested in hacking, especially people interested in making a hack that isn't just a YouTube hack.

Please tell me what you think, like, dislike, if you think the idea is good/useful, and absolutely point out any errors, glitches, or messed up graphics.

This is some truly outstanding work.

The only thing I found was some of the bushes in one of the level have one tile that has an off color (slightly different tint of green) and maybe a few misleading jumps. (Just the one that leads in a big curve downwards when you really need to land a few spaces to the right.

Although this is really not bad, it's awesome!

All that's fixed in the update :) I caught the palette thing, a couple people told me about the jumps. The one in my files has 3 or 4 more levels in it.

In addition this, it also has the same messagebox message twice, and it has 0 time with a green berry you can eat which means if you eat it you only have 20 seconds to completely the level as opposed to forever (that is a mean trick [I am going to use it])

I suggest going ahead and making a set of map16 with layer priority enabled.

This hack has nice pallets and the wacky ground tile placement that's become standard around hacks now, but for some reason I really couldn't get into it. Maybe it's because it just doesn't feel like an actual game. It does have some good advice and had a lot of work put into it though, so I may give it another try sometime.

Hey, I have somthing to say ^^

But thats not for raocow so it will be in spoilers.

Spoiler: show
You can break the level "Don't Number Levels" when you steal lakitus cloud. As I have seen in the star road thing you don't like it when a level is so easy breakable. So I am telling you. Thats also the reason I never have Lakitu in one of my Levels

I knew that was a risk, that's why I tried to have him so high, it takes a pretty good jump to hit him in most areas of the level.

I played this hack roughly a week before the end of the Vanilla Competition. while I really liked the ideas presented in this Hack, I felt it was lacking in some major areas.

Tails, clearly you have a lot of innovation; this is a quality that ranks above all others when it comes to game design. Every level felt fresh and enjoyable, yet you seemed to rely very little than the bare mechanics of the original game. For this I applaud you, and I recognize you as one of my favorite hackers in a very long while.

That being said, It seems that the entirety of your creative efforts was spent on one thing- visuals. While I did have a lot of fun, most of what I found to be entertaining was simply eye candy. You have a fresh visual style, and, judging by this years vanilla contest entries, the freshness of this style is going to be very short-lived. (I've posted that parody screenshot like 30 times already, but here it is again: THIS is what has happened to your design style, thanks to that wonderful thing called imitation)

The truth is, every obstacle or gameplay mechanic presented in this hack has already been done. Normally, this wouldn't even be an issue for me (the above fact is true in 99.99% of hacks), but it seems you have the potential to do something more. Very few hacks have ever been created that, when played, left everyone in a state of shock. This effect has been harder and harder to do as hacking has evolved, but there is still uncharted territory to explore. Strip away the pretty visuals, and this game, like almost all others, shares the same old ideas as almost every hack before it.

So, how does one improve on this? Clearly I can't give you a straight answer to improve on my critique- all I can do is offer my personal design philosophy, in tandem with what I personally have seen to have worked. The rest of this post may or may not be completely worthless to you. I don't claim to be some sort of pro-hacker, but I can try my best to help:

From what I can see, there are two fundamental skills required to make fun gameplay. First and foremost, you have to be able to loosely plan out what you want to do with your level BEFORE you start working on it. Truly good levels are comprised of a series of short gimmicks. The level gives you a short taste of something fresh and interesting, and moves on to something else. This is not to be confused with the 'single-gimmick', brutal mario style of design (make as many variations of the same idea as possible, then line it all up in a level); we as humans are victim to the accumulation of tollerance- nothing is as good as it was that 'first time'. A level must strive to string a series of 'first times' together, thus maximizing the level of interest the player will feel. Doing this takes planning- you have to brainstorm to think of new gameplay mechanics. rearranging blocks will never be as effective as simply taking the time to think outside the box. Find some of these ideas that complement eachother: one concept should lead to the next, without ever repeating itself (the best extremes I can think of to exemplify this concept are Wario Ware and, again, Brutal Mario)

The second skill is that of balancing planning with Improvisation: Don't make a level look too formulaic in design. Games like Master Courses and WTH take this idea to the extreme- there is a very chaotic sense of development going on; while both are saturated in creativity, no order whatsoever causes confusion for the player, an unbalanced difficulty curve, and a lack of visual appeal.

I really don't know if this will help you, but I figured I'd help as much as I could. Hopefully there will be some benefit in posting this, even if that only benefit is "LOL U R IDIOT".

EDIT: holy crap i wrote a freaking essay O_o

What you wrote is true, but this hack was never going to be a highly advanced hack or something. This was just made to help others. And while it is true that apart from the map16 eye candy it isn't that big of a deal, it is somewhat back to the roots.

seeing how high ranked this is on SMWC it has to be good. (not that that is the only thing to look at)

@ AnonymousBl00dlust: You provide very insightful information, and were I making a plot-based non-educational hack I would've been more tempted to do such. I wanted the levels to be short, since I was keeping it vanilla-esque, and was limited to 2 message boxes per level (I considered patching, but figured there would be time in future (see: 201, and maybe 102, if I make it))

I only had very basic ideas I wanted to share, and after making some stuff for ASMT, decided that I had enough ability to make a full hack, my first hack, SMW Hacks 101. I changed in style very rapidly (ask Jassmin) originally it was just playing around with level design, then, what people don't know, is I originally had message boxes which were emo whine-fests just yelling at people for stupid level design, then I figured instead of a half-assed attack, I should make it educational. Part of why I rarely critique others' work is because I am so meticulous I would probably give a rude, blunt critique, which may not help in the long run. I really ope to make more in-depth, actual, levels at some point, but that'll probably be a summer type thing.

Thanks, indeed for your... essay (which, as a Creative Writing major, I give it no less than a B :P) I really do enjoy the insight, and will keep it in mind. :)

@Tails_155:

I get where you're coming from, but even in an educational hack, your focus should not just be visuals. If you want to educate people, educate them about good game play as well; offer insightful tips on developing unique obstacles and provide some examples.

From what I can recall, I don't remember seeing a single message box with a game play-related tip inside. If I were you, I would have made *at least* half the levels focus on such concepts. If you were afraid that novice players might give up and miss out on the info, you could make all the platforming levels accessible after the game is completed (kind of like your "other ideas" world)

whatever, Its a good hack. You can do what you want, I'm just trying to help you make it better ;)
